Sep. 25—The Farrell-Sharpsville game was the only District 10 region game on Friday's area football schedule. In Ohio, Brookfield edged Crestview, 20-13, in a Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference clash.

In non-region games, Sharon beat Ft. LeBoeuf, 40-27; Hickory routed Mercyhurst Prep, 55-13; Mercer topped Maplewood, 21-7; Grove City rolled past Fairview, 41-8, and Conneaut (Ohio) defeated Reynolds, 42-22.

Friday's Corry at Slippery Rock game was canceled due to COVID issues with the Beavers. The Rockets will not play this weekend.

There are a pair of Region 1 games today. Wilmington hosts Lakeview at noon while Greenville visits Kennedy Catholic for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Following are staff reports on games reported to The Herald:

— Hickory 55, Mercyhurst Prep 13 — At Hornet Stadium, junior quarterback Logan Woods threw 5 touchdown passes as the Region 3 Hornets (3-2) blew out the Region 4 Lakers (1-2).

Woods fired three TD passes to Jackson Pryts (15, 22, and 7 yards), connected with Keenan Scullin on a 22-yard touchdown toss, and threw a 15-yarder to Ty Holland.

Holland also scored on a 4-yard touchdown run, Ramarion Whitehead returned a punt 80 yards for a score, and Nakeem Jones tacked on a 2-yard TD run.

For Mercyhurst Prep, quarterback David Bahm threw a 38-yard TD pass to Dewey Byrd and Bahm scored on a 6-yard run.

Maplewood broke a scoreless deadlock early in the 3rd quarter on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Dominick Kinney to Connor Palmiero. Sadie Thomas booted the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Mercer tied the game 7-all later in the 3rd frame when Logan Turton broke loose on a 67-yard TD run and Troy Bachman's PAT.

— Grove City 41, Fairview 8 — The Eagles' struggling defense forced a pair of crucial 2nd-quarter turnovers and 7 Grove City gridders scored to help the locals improve to 3-0 at home and celebrate Homecoming at Forker Field.

Through 4 games while allowing 29.8 points, 194.25 yards rushing and 121.5 yards passing, Grove City's defense rose to the occasion, limiting the Tigers to just 131 yards of total offense (107 rushing, 24 passing).

Prior to the game, Fairview (4-1) was averaging 35 points and 380 yards per game in wins over Cambridge Springs, Franklin, Girard and Corry.

Grove City opened the game by chewing up 5:39 of clock on a 15-play, 76-yard drive and scored on Curtis Hovis' 1-yard plunge for a 7-0 lead before the Eagles erupted for 34 second-period points. Quarterback Hunter Hohman sandwiched scoring strikes 55 seconds apart to Gavin Lutz (16 yards) and Anthony Pereira (29 yards) around an Anthony Nemec interception for a 21-0 cushion.

After a 40-yard, 4th-down Nemec run on the Eagles' next possession, Zach Rodgers scored from a yard away out of the Wildcat formation for a 28-0 cushion with 4:26 left before the half. Less than 2 minutes later following Hayden McCreadie's pick, Joey Hathaway took a Jet sweep around right end for a 50-yard touchdown.

Hohman closed Grove City's scoring on a 41-yard carry off a broken play as the 1st-half clock expired.

Offensively, the Eagles accumulated 362 yards of total offense (250 rushing, 112 passing). Hovis led with 100 yards on 19 carries, while Nemec (53), Hathaway (50) and Hohman (35) tacked on another 138 yards on the ground. Hohman completed 9 passes —to 6 different receivers — for 107 yards and 2 TDs, while Pereira pulled in 4 passes for 46 yards.

Joshua Lockett scored from 1-yard out midway through the 4th quarter for Fairview's lone score — Information submitted by Herald Sports Correspondent Corey J. Corbin.
