Roundup: Three area teams reach NCISAA finals

May 13—HIGH POINT — High Point Christian shut out Concord Academy 8-0 on Tuesday at Oak View Baptist Church in the semifinals of the NCISAA 3A baseball playoffs.

Carter Bass went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for the Cougars (20-4), who scored one run in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth. Jake Dunlap, who doubled, and Luke Homol each had two hits and two runs.

Cole Philbin added a double and a run, while Noah Hill had a hit, a run and an RBI. Mitch Adams also had a hit.

Eli Crump got the win on the mound, allowing one hit while striking out eight in six innings. Sam Sapp struck out two in one inning as HPCA pitchers faced the minimum batters.

The Cougars, the No. 1 seed from the East, will face Hickory Grove, the No. 1 seed from the West, in the championship series at Hickory Grove. Game 1 will be on Friday at 4:30 p.m., followed on Saturday by Game 2 at noon and, if necessary, Game 3 at 2:30.

WESLEYAN, RABUN GAP

HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian beat Rabun Gap 10-0 in five innings Tuesday at Wesleyan's field in the semifinals of the NCISAA 4A baseball playoffs.

Grant Aycock had three hits while Hudson Lance and Drew Downs each had two for the Trojans (16-4), who scored six runs in the first and four in the third. Downs drove in three runs, and Lance and Christian Walker each drove in two.

Sam Cozart struck out eight eight three innings on the mound.

Wesleyan, the top seed from the East, will face familiar foe Charlotte Christian, the top seed from the West, in the championship series. Game 1 will be on Friday, followed on Saturday by Game 2 and, if necessary, Game 3.

NCISAA SOFTBALL HP CHRISTIAN, PARROTT

KINSTON — Fourth-seeded High Point Christian topped top-seeded Arendell Parrott Academy 6-1 on Tuesday at Parrott in the semifinals of the NCISAA 3A softbal playoffs.

Mary Douglas Hayworth went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for the Cougars (11-5), who scored single runs in the third and fourth to lead 2-0 and two in the fifth and sixth to lead 6-1.

Maci Burkhart, who tripled, added two hits and an RBI. Laci Jarrell also had two hits while Autumn Charboneau, Sarah Carr, Natalie Wilkinson and Rachel Davis had one hit each.

HPCA, which split its series against Forsyth Country Day during the regular season, will host the Furies for the championship series at Wallburg Baptist Church. The first two games will be Friday at 3 p.m. and 5, followed by the series finale Saturday at 5, if necessary.

NCHSAA BASEBALL LEDFORD, EAST DAVIDSON

THOMASVILLE — Ledford edged East Davidson 2-1 in Central Carolina 2A action Tuesday at East Davidson.

Both teams scored in the third and Ledford (5-0 overall, 3-0 CCC) pushed across the go-ahead run in the fifth.

Bailey Smith was the winning pitcher for the Panthers and also drove in both runs. Tyler Welch was 1 for 3 with a run scored for East (2-3, 0-2).

TW ANDREWS, EASTERN RANDOLPH

HIGH POINT — T.W. Andrews lost a doubleheader against Eastern Randolph, 24-0 and 14-2, in PAC-7 2A baseball Tuesday at Andrews.

JaShawn Harris and Wester Palanca each had a hit for the Red Raiders in the first game. Palanca had two hits, and Timothy Ratley, Harris and Brendon Miller each had one in the second game.

Antonio Peak and Clifton Autry pitched for Andrews in the first game, while Palanca and Travion McCullum pitched in the second game.

The Red Raiders moved to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

SW GUILFORD, PARKLAND

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford rolled past Parkland 10-0 in five innings Tuesday in Piedmont Triad 3A Conference baseball at Southwest.

Easton Morgan allowed no hits while walking one and striking out 11 in the complete-game win.

Joe Specht had two hits, including a double, for the Cowboys (5-0 overall, 1-0 PTC). Cooper Gandulfo had a home run and three RBIs, while Morgan had a hit and two RBIs.

Jaxon Rauber also had a solo home run, Nate Rathjen had a double and an RBI, and Hunter Whitten added a hit and an RBI as Southwest scored in every inning and led 8-0 after a five-run third inning.

HP CENTRAL, GRIMSLEY

HIGH POINT — High Point Central fell 18-0 against Grimsley in four innings Tuesday in Metro 4A Conference baseball at Central.

The Bison dropped to 0-5 both overall and in the conference.

GLENN, EAST FORSYTH

KERNERSVILLE — Glenn lost 5-3 against rival East Forsyth in Central Piedmont 4A Conference baseball Tuesday at East Forsyth.

Chris Shoemaker and Garrett Horn each had two hits and an RBI for the Bobcats (1-5 overall, 0-3 conference), who trailed 4-0 through five innings. Josh Nolan added a hit while Michael Peele had an RBI.

Peyton Kowalski struck out three in four innings on the mound, while Carmine Lancaster, who struck out one, and Alexavier Pender each pitched one inning.

OAK GROVE, LEXINGTON

LEXINGTON — Oak Grove crushed Lexington 29-0 in Central Carolina 2A Conference baseball Tuesday at Lexington.

The Grizzlies improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the CCC.

JAMESTOWN — Ragsdale beat Page 7-0 in Metro 4A Conference baseball Tuesday at Ragsdale.

Win Scott went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Tigers (5-1 overall, 4-1 conference), who scored three runs in the third and four in the fourth. Julian Abreu also had a solo home run, while Evan Cullis had a double and an RBI. Cole Moebius, Chase Gurney each added a hit and an RBI.

Scott struck out 14 while allowing two hits and no walks in five innings on the mound. Gurney, who struck out three, and Garrett Crum, who struck out two, each pitched one inning.

SOUTHERN GUILFORD, SW RANDOLPH

ASHEBORO — Southern Guilford fell 12-1 against Southwestern Randolph in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference baseball Tuesday at Southwestern Randolph.

The Storm dipped to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

THOMASVILLE, SALISBURY

SALISBURY — Thomasville lost 15-1 in five innings against Salisbury in Central Carolina 2A Conference baseball Tuesday at Salisbury.

Avery Adams went 2 for 3 to lead the Bulldogs (3-2 overall, 0-2 CCC), while Owen Callicutt and Josiah Moore each added a hit. Reece Payne, Zach Lewis, Callicutt and Moore pitched, with Lewis and Moore each striking out two.

TRINITY, PROVIDENCE GROVE

FRANKLINVILLE — Trinity fell 9-2 against Providence Grove in PAC-7 2A baseball Tuesday at Providence Grove.

The Bulldogs dipped to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

TENNIS SW GUILFORD, HP CENTRAL

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guiflord swept the six singles matches and topped High Point Central 8-1 in nonconference girls tennis Tuesday.

Audrey Serb, Annie Vo, Tran Nguyen, Nicole Sopala, Maggi Mugi and Shiani Lal won singles matches for the Cowgirls (2-2).

Mugi/Lal and Avery McCaskill/Lauren Harris were doubles winners for Southwest. Mariela Rodriguez and Miarr Hla Shwe won a doubles match for Central (1-4).

GLENN, REAGAN

KERNERSVILLE — Glenn lost 9-0 against Reagan in Central Piedmont 4A Conference girls tennis at Glenn.

The Ladycats dropped to 0-2 both overall and in the conference.

THOMASVILLE, SALISBURY

SALISBURY — Thomasville fell 9-0 against Salisbury in Central Carolina 2A Conference girls tennis Tuesday at Salisbury.

The Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 both overall and in the conference.

HPU SPORTS BASEBALL

FARMVILLE, Va. — High Point University fell to Longwood 8-1 in Big South baseball Tuesday at Buddy Bolding Stadium.

HPU (14-25, 12-19 Big South) scored its run in the first. Peyton Carr blooped a double and scored when Adam Stuart ripped a single up the middle.

Brady Pearre went 3 for 3 and was the only Panther with more than one hit.

Longwood (16-27, 9-20 Big South) tied the score in the first and went ahead with three in the second.

Nick Hernandez took the loss on the mound for the Panthers. He pitched into the second, giving up three runs on four hits.

HPU finishes its home schedule with a three-game series Friday and Saturday against Presbyterian. The set begins with a single game at 6 p.m. Friday at 6 p.m. and continues with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL WESLEYAN, ELLIS

ADVANCE — Wesleyan edged Ellis 10-9 in eight innings Tuesday at Ellis.

Will Gaynor picked up the win for Wesleyan, giving up two hits and striking out five in five innings.

Wesleyan mustered 11 hits. Jake Brown was 2 for 5 with three RBIs. Roddy Woodard was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Neil Swindell was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

GREENSBORO — Wesleyan Christian swept Canterbury 9-0 in boys tennis Tuesday at Canterbury.

Henry Henning, Eli Henning, Andrias Cimpean, Patrick Greene, Blake Sherrill and Robbie Moore won in singles for the Trojans, who also got an extra singles win from Owen MacCarthy. Henry and Eli Henning, Greene/Sherrill and Cimpean/Moore won in doubles.

Wesleyan also lost 5-4 against Ellis on Thursday. Eli Henning, Greene and Sherrill won in singles, while Henry and Eli Henning won in doubles.
