Roundup: Soccer brackets released; Villa tennis tops GC; Lakeview football falls to GM, 40-8

Oct. 22—District 10 released the playoff brackets for boys and girls soccer on Thursday.

GIRLS

Class 1A

Region 1 co-champs Mercer and Wilmington will meet in the semifinals next week.

Class 2A

Greenville plays Girard at 1 p.m. Saturday at Meadville Area High's Bender Field while Grove City faces Harbor Creek at 2 p.m. at the Hagerty Family Events Center's Dollinger Field. The GC-HC winner will meet Slippery Rock (bye) in the quarterfinals next week.

BOYS

Class 1A

Mercer plays Sharpsville in the semifinals next week while Wilmington earned a bye into the championship match.

Class 2A

Greenville battles Ft. LeBoeuf at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bender Field in Meadville while Hickory squares off against Mercyhurst Prep at 3 p.m. Saturday at Carter Field in Titusville.

Grove City (bye) will meet the Greenville-LeBoeuf winner in the quarterfinals next week while Slippery Rock and North East, both earned byes, will meet in the quarterfinals.

GIRLS TENNIS

District 10 Team Tourney

— Villa Maria Academy 5, Grove City 0 — At Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, the Victors captured the District 10 Class 2A team championship with a sweep over the Eagles.

Anna Poranski, who defeated Grove City junior Macy Matson for the D-10 Class 2A individual title last week (6-3, 6-0), picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Matson at No. 1 singles on Thursday. Sophia Glance and Basil Bannister also earned singles' wins for Villa.

Grove City finished the season with a 14-3 record.

"We lost to an excellent Villa Maria team, but our players played hard in every point in all the matches," said GC Coach Michael Coulter.

Singles: Poranski def. Matson, 6-2, 6-1; Sophia Glance def. Katie Feng, 6-0, 6-1; Bannister def. Emily Williams, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. Doubles: Abby Consiglio-Margaret Prichard def. Cana Severson-Jane Coulter, 6-2, 6-2; Margaret McGovern-Sofia Falvo def. Lillian Conger-Ella West, 6-1, 6-3.

Note: McDowell won the District 10 Class 3A title on Thursday with a 4-1 victory over Fairview.

FOOTBALL

— Gen. McLane 40, Lakeview 8 — At Linden Field in Edinboro, the Region 1 Sailors fell to 1-7 with a loss to the Region 5 Lancers (5-3).

John Amon rushed for 247 yards and scored 3 touchdowns as McLane rumbled for 492 rushing yards.

Mitchell Tingley scored on a 53-yard TD run for Lakeview. The Sailors also had a safety when Tingley was sacking Amon and he got spun around and threw the ball out of the end zone.

Sailors' QB Gavin Murdock rushed for 79 yards on 18 carries and Tingley had 70 yards on 4 totes.

Murdock went 5-of-16 for 72 yards with 2 interceptions and Leyton Zacherl was 4-of-9 for 44 yards. Tingley hauled in 3 catches for 59 yards.

GIRLS SOCCER

— Wilmington 5, Meadville 2 — At Greyhounds Stadium, Lindsey Martineau had a hat trick to lead the Region 1 Hounds past Region 6 Meadville.

Reese Walker and Ashley Wignall scored the other goals for Wilmington. Walker was credited with a pair of assists while Martineau, Anna Williams, and Annalee Gardner had 1 assist each.

Phoebe Templin scored both goals for Meadville. Natalie Smith assisted on one of those goals.

Taylor Kendall made 6 saves in goal for the Lady Hounds. Laci Carlson collected 8 saves for the Lady Bulldogs.

Wilmington closed out the regular season with a 13-3 record. They share the Region 1 title with Mercer. Both teams went 7-1 in region play.

Wilmington and Mercer will play in the District 10 Class 1A semifinals next Thursday. Seneca (bye), Cambridge Springs, and Eisenhower are on the other side of the bracket.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

— Jamestown 3, Commodore Perry 0 — At "The Fish Tank" in Jamestown, the Muskies and Panthers wrapped up the regular season on Thursday night.

Rachel Cowher led Jamestown (8-4, 12-5) to the Region 1 win with 17 points. Game scores were 25-12, 25-8, 25-6.

Jamestown: Cowher 17 points; Sara Stevenson 8 points, 5 kills; Delaney Cowger 12 points, 6 aces, 20 assists; Madison Bercis 8 points; Liz Kammerdiener 12 points, 11 kills, 5 digs. Commodore Perry: No stats reported.

JV: Jamestown, 25-10, 25-15.

— West Middlesex 3, Kennedy Catholic 0 — At Hermitage, the Ms. Reds went a perfect 12-0 in Region 1 and moved to 17-4 overall with a 25-8, 25-10, 25-18 sweep of KC.

West Middlesex: Emily Anthony 5 kills, 9 aces; Kennedy Beatty 5 kills; Katy Briggs 5 digs. Kennedy Catholic: No stats reported.

JV: WM, 25-12, 25-19.

OHSAA DIV. IV

PLAYOFFS

— Brookfield 3, Sebring-McKinley 0 — At Western Reserve High School in Berlin Center, the Lady Warriors advanced to the Region 13 Northeast 2 District semifinals with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-10 win over McKinley.

Brookfield stats were not reported to The Herald by deadline on Thursday night.

Brookfield is the 10th seed in the district tourney while McKinley was seeded 13th.

The semifinals and championship match will be played at Columbiana High School. Brookfield faces Western Reserve in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The title match is Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.

On Thursday, Western Reserve defeated Heartland Christian in the quarterfinals, 25-19, 25-20, 25-18. That game was played before the Brookfield match at Western Reserve High.

Western Reserve is the No. 2 seed in the tourney.
