Roundup: Oak Grove wins regional, highlights state qualifiers
May 6—One team and three individuals from area schools qualified Tuesday for next week's NCHSAA state championships for girls golf.
In the 1A/2A Central regional at Cedarbrook Country Club, Oak Grove finished first with a team score of 250. Emma Maddock shot a 71, followed by Sarah Stewart with an 87 and Kaitlyn McDonell with a 92. Pine Lake Prep was second with a 267.
Ledford's Ashley Limbacher also qualified as an individual with an 81, while Bishop McGuinness' Laney Wessels qualified with an 88.
In the 4A Central regional at Pinehurst No. 6, High Point Central's Emma Carlisle Niebauer qualified individually with an 85.
The top two teams and the top nine individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the state championships Tuesday. The 1A/2A championship will be at Pinehurst No. 8, while the 4A championship will be at Pinehurst No. 1.
SOCCER HP CHRISTIAN, GRACE CHRISTIAN
HIGH POINT — Fourth-seeded High Point Christian scored three first-half goals to beat GRACE Christian of Raleigh 3-0 on Tuesday at Correll-Morris Field in the opening round of the NCISAA 3A East girls soccer playoffs.
Chloe Ausburn, Lauren Austin and Grayson Hepner each scored for the Cougars (7-10), who will travel to top-seeded Cary Christian in the second round Friday. Ausburn and Claire Patseavouras each had an assist.
Cameron Martin earned the shutout in goal.
WESTCHESTER CD, THE O'NEAL SCHOOL
HIGH POINT — Seventh-seeded Westchester Country Day defeated The O'Neal School 5-2 on Tuesday at Westchester's Kennedy Field in the first round of the NCISAA 2A West girls soccer playoffs.
The Wildcats (3-10) advanced to face second-seeded Caldwell today at Caldwell.
SOFTBALL SW GUILFORD, ENKA
HIGH POINT — Fourth-seeded Southwest Guilford fell 8-0 against 13th-seeded Enka on Tuesday at Southwest in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A West softball playoffs.
The Cowgirls, the Piedmont Triad Conference champions, finished their season with an 11-4 record.
HPU SPORTS MEN'S GOLF
HIGH POINT — High Point sophomore Brandon Einstein was selected Wednesday to compete as an individual in an upcoming NCAA regional by the NCAA selection committee.
Einstein was given a spot in the Kingston Falls regional at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tennessee. Clemson, N.C. state and Charlotte are among the teams in that regional.
The five lowest teams and the lowest individual not on those five teams in each of six regions advance to the NCAA Championships May 28-June 2 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
MEN'S SOCCER
HIGH POINT — High Point University forward MD Myers, who is second in the nation with 14 goals and has also dished four assists, was named as one of 15 semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy, announced by the United Soccer Coaches on Tuesday.
The MAC Hermann, a 10-pound crystal soccer ball awarded annually since 1967, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This is the first time a High Point player has been selected as a semifinalist for the Mac Hermann Trophy.
TRACK AND FIELD
DURHAM — Paul Gore and Terris Burton II of High Point University took first-place finishes in the Duke Twilight meet last weekend.
Gore won the 100 meters in a personal-best 10.52 seconds while Burton won the 110 hurdles in a person-best 15.30. Deron Dudley finished second to Gore in the 100.
Freddie Allen III was runner-up in the long jump, leaping 7.42 meters while Alicia Dawson was third in the women's long jump at 6.03 meters/
BASEBALL PLAYERS OF WEEK
CHARLOTTE — High Point's Teddy Merritt is the Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week for games played April 26-May 2, the conference announced Monday. In addition, HPU's Grey Lyttle and Upstate's Kevin Davis were selected the Co-Relief Pitcher of the Week. Merritt tossed a complete game 5-hitter at Winthrop, the first by a Panther since the 2019 Big South tournament. Lyttle earned the save in the 19-15, series-clinching victory over Winthrop on Saturday afternoon.
MAYEA HONORED
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — High Point attackman Brayden Mayea was named the Southern Conference men's lacrosse offensive player of the week, respectively, for all games April 27 to May 2. The awards are selected by the league office and are the final ones of the season. Mayea scored five goals in Saturday's 16-11 win over Jacksonville, which clinched the Panthers a share of the regular-season SoCon title and the No. 2 seed in the upcoming SoCon Men's Lacrosse Championship.
HIGH POINT — Matt Wilson and Greg Conrad won the "Shootout" in the 2021 Tom Dawson Men's Member-Member Tournament on Sunday at Willow Creek to be crowned the overall Member-Member champion.
Wilson and Conrad won the "Shootout" on the 18th hole in the alternate shot format with a par 4 over the team of Scott Dunbar and Dave Rode.
The format was five nine-hole matches played within four flights, with the flight winners and a winner of a playoff competing in the shootout. Flight winners were Marc DeLille and Wes Keever, Conrad and Wilson, Jordan Reece and Kenny Stevens and Sean Cowan and Dan Delvecchio. Dunbar and Rode won the shootout for flight runners-up.
Brain Casey, Sam Magill, Wes Keever and Andy Bills were closest to the hole winners.
