Roundup: Ledford girls tennis sweeps Lexington

May 15—WALLBURG — Ledford swept Lexington 9-0 in Central Carolina 2A Conference girls tennis Thursday at Ledford.

Jada Welch, Mila Riggsbee, Maddie Hagee, Casey Embler, Abby Dunbar and Sydney Carter won in singles for the Panthers (4-0 overall, 3-0 CCC). Welch/Riggsbee, Hagee/Erin Luoma and Kayleigh Batchek/Kate Riddle won in doubles.

SW GUILFORD, MOUNT TABOR

WINSTON-SALEM — Southwest Guilford lost 7-2 against Mount Tabor in Piedmont Triad 3A Conference girls tennis Thursday at Mount Tabor.

Audrey Serb won in singles for the Cowgirls (2-3 overall, 0-1 PTC), while Serb/Nicole Sopala won in doubles.

EAST DAVIDSON, SOUTH ROWAN

THOMASVILLE — East Davidson beat South Rowan 8-1 in Central Carolina 2A Conference girls tennis Thursday at East.

The Golden Eagles improved to 3-2 both overall and in the CCC.

RAGSDALE, NW GUILFORD

GREENSBORO — Ragsdale edged Northwest Guilford 5-4 in Metro 4A Conference girls tennis Thursday at Northwest.

Ruby Kemp, Ella Perez and Lexi Honeycutt won in singles for the Tigers (3-1 overall, 2-1 conference), who beat Northwest for the first time since joining the Metro Conference.

Cameron Wright/Kemp and McKenzie Akbari/Caroline Mott won in doubles.

LEDFORD REGIONALS

SALISBURY — Two Ledford doubles teams qualified for this weekend's 2A state championships in Cary.

Chris Hartzell and Sam Kruse, seeded No. 2, won three matches before falling in the finals to take the No. 2 seed into the state tournament. Joe Lamb and Jake Queen, who were unseeded, won two matches to reach the semifinals, where they lost. But they won their third-place match to earn the No. 3 seed.

BASEBALL GLENN, EAST FORSYTH

KERNERSVILLE — Glenn lost 3-1 against rival East Forsyth in Central Piedmont 4A Conference baseball Thursday at Glenn.

Michael Peele went 3 for 4 with an RBI while Peyton Horn and Garrett Horn each added a hit for the Bobcats (1-6 overall, 0-4 CPC), who trailed 3-0 after the first inning. Garrett Horn struck out nine in five innings on the mound.

TRINITY, PROVIDENCE GROVE

TRINITY — Trinity fell 5-3 against Providence Grove in PAC-7 2A baseball Thursday at Trinity.

The Bulldogs dipped to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

HP CHRISTIAN, HICKORY GROVE

CHARLOTTE — High Point Christian fell 5-1 against Hickory Grove in game 1 of the NCISAA 3A baseball championship Friday at Hickory Grove.

The teams will play game 2 today at noon and game 3, if necessary, will follow.

The Lions improved to 28-2 while the Cougars dipped to 20-6.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, CHARLOTTE CHRISTIAN

CHARLOTTE — Wesleyan Christian fell 3-2 against Charlotte Christian in the first game of the NCISAA 4A baseball championship series Friday at Charlotte Christian.

The Knights scored the go-ahead run on a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.

The teams play game 2 today at noon and, if necessary, game 3 will follow.

Charlotte Christian improved to 20-6 overall while the Trojans dropped to 16-5.

HITOMS ADD TWO

THOMASVILLE — The High Point-Thomasville HiToms announced the signings of Noah Ledford and Gabe Golob, two premier college baseball talents from Georgia Southern and Wake Forest.

Ledford is one of the most feared first basemen in the Sun Belt, crushing 23 home runs over his 103 career games. The Buford, Georgia, native was named a 2019 Collegiate Baseball All-American as a freshman, after a .291 average and 11 home runs.

Ledford is second on the Eagles with 12 homers and 38 RBIs this season, once again providing punch to the Georgia Southern offense.

Golob is one of the more intriguing additions to the HiToms pitching staff. The former Harvard-Westlake School starting pitcher is slated to transfer from NYU to Wake Forest for the 2022 season.

The Encino, California, native attended Harvard-Westlake as a high schooler and was their ace in his Junior campaign, putting up a 1.17 ERA. Harvard-Westlake has been the best baseball school in the country over the past decade, producing MLBers Max Fried, Lucas Giolito, and Jack Flaherty.

WALLACE — Paul Simson, a four-time winner of the Senior Amateur Hall of Fame tournament at Willow Creek, captured the North Carolina Senior Amateur for the tenth time on Thursday.

Simson shot a final round 74 and finished at 4-under-par 212 for a four-shot victory over William Banta of Jacksonville.

Simson entered the final round with 2019 Senior Amateur Hall of Fame champ Steve Harwell of Mooresville. Harwell cardec a final round 79 and finished third at 217.
