Roundup: Kingerski All-State soccer selection; Brookfield boys drop season-opener vs. Mathews

Dec. 1—Slippery Rock junior Nick Kingerski has been named to the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association All-State Team.

Kingerski, a kicking standout in both soccer and football, was named All-State at forward. He was recently named a 1st Team selection on the District 10 Region 3 football team.

He is the only local soccer player that was named All-State this season.

The Rockets beat North East in the District 10 Class 2A quarterfinals and then suffered a 2-0 loss to Fairview in the semifinals. Fairview ended up beating Grove City for the District 10 championship.

Last season, Hickory's Paul Morelli was the lone All-State selection among local players.

BOYS BASKETBALL

— Vienna-Mathews 65, Brookfield 48 — At Vienna Center Tuesday night, Coach Shawn Hammond's Brookfield High Warriors opened the season with a loss to the Mustangs.

Brookfield led 18-10 at the end of the opening quarter and 24-23 at halftime. Mathews held a slim 39-36 lead after 3 quarters of play, but outscored the Warriors 26-12 in the 4th frame to secure the win.

Vinny Sharp and Vincent Greenwood had 14 points each for Mathews. Sharp buried 3 treys. Dominic Greenwood and Tyler Hopkinson added 13 points each.

Donovan Pawlowski led the way for Brookfield. He drained 4 three-pointers en route to a game-high 19 points, Josh Solida scored 14, and Isaiah Jones added 9 points.

Jones also grabbed 9 rebounds and blocked 5 shots while David Pawlowski dished out 4 assists and had 3 steals.

Brookfield is back in action at 7 p.m. Friday when it visits Hubbard.
