Roundup: HiToms, Rockers partner in hosting spring league

Feb. 24—THOMASVILLE — The HiToms, in partnership with the Rockers, will host a high school baseball league this spring, the HiToms announced Tuesday.

The league will play a six-game schedule from March 1 through April 11 to help bridge the gap into the later NCHSAA-amended calendar this year. It will feature 15 teams from southern Virginia and the Triad area.

The schedule will include games at Truist Point, home of the Rockers, as the organizations enter their first partnership.

The HiToms will announce the league schedule Thursday at hitoms.com.

FOOTBALL SCHEDULE CHANGES

More football games have been moved to Thursday in an effort to avoid bad weather. As of Tuesday afternoon, the schedule is:

Thursday — Ledford at Graham, 6 p.m.; Oak Grove at West Forsyth, 7; Reidsville at Thomasville, 6:30; 7, T.W. Andrews at Jordan-Matthews, 7; East Forsyth at Glenn, 7; Davie County at Ragsdale, 7

Friday — East Davidson at West Davidson, 6:30; High Point Central at Southwest Guilford, 7; North Stokes at Bishop McGuinness, 7; Randleman at Wheatmore, 7; Western Guilford at Southern Guilford, 7; South Stokes at Trinity, 7.

HPU MEN EARN SOCCER AWARDS

HIGH POINT — High Point University's MD Myers and Karson Kendall were among this week's Big South Conference men's soccer award winners, the league announced Tuesday.

Myers, along with USC Upstate's Pol Monells, was selected offensive player of the week, while Kendall was named the defensive player of the week.

Myers scored twice in High Point's 4-0 victory over Gardner-Webb on Sunday. For his efforts, he was named TopDrawerSoccer.com's National Player of the Week.

Kendall was part of the Panthers' defense that blanked Gardner-Webb, and he assisted on Myers' second goal of the game. High Point allowed only one shot on goal for the game and permitted just two corner kicks.

HPU WOMEN EARN SOCCER AWARDS

HIGH POINT — High Point University's Sam Gerhart was chosen offensive player of the week while Alex Deperno was named the defensive player of the week in the Big South Conference women's soccer awards announced Tuesday.

Gerhart notched the season's first hat trick with three goals in the Panthers' 3-0 win at Winthrop on Sunday. Deperno was part of the Panthers defense that limited Winthrop to just five shots. It was High Point's second consecutive shutout to start the spring season.

HIGH POINT — High Point University's Gabrielle Idlebird has been named the Big South Conference volleyball player of the week, the league announced Tuesday.

Idlebird had 18 kills, a .500 attack percentage, 4.0 blocks and 21.0 points in High Point's two 3-0 sweeps at UNC Asheville. She hit .375 in the series opener (7-1-16) with two assists and one block, then notched a season-high 11 kills with no errors and a .611 hitting percentage, along with two block assists and one solo block in the finale.
