Roundup: GC upsets Franklin; Lady Sailors clinch share of R4 title

Feb. 28—BOYS BASKETBALL

* Grove City 69, Franklin 61 — At Grove City, the Eagles (9-4, 9-6) posted the Region 4 upset over the Knights (11-3, 15-6).

With Franklin's loss, Hickory has now clinched the Region 4 title outright.

The Eagles and Knights were tied 13-all after the opening 8 minutes, but GC outscored Franklin 21-13 in the 2nd quarter to lead 34-26 at the break. Both teams scored 35 points in the 2nd half.

Michael Brooks rifled in 26 points to lead the way for Grove City, Luke Hostetler buried 5 treys en route to 18 points, and Gavin Lutz added 9 markers.

Easton Fulmer paced Franklin with 19 points, Luke Guth scored 17, and Hayden Adams had 14 points.

* Hickory 54, Greenville 51 (OT) — At Greenville, the Region 4 champion Hornets (13-0, 17-2) edged the Trojans (6-7, 10-10) without leading scorer Peyton Mele, who was ill.

The game was tied 22-all at halftime, Hickory led 33-30 after 3 and the Trojans forced OT by outscoring the Hornets 14-11 in the 4th. Hickory closed out the win with a 10-7 scoring advantage in overtime.

Connor Evans led Hickory with 20 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Also, Matt Cannone added 10 points and dished out 6 assists, and Joe Fazzone contributed 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Ben Cano rifled in a game-high 22 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for Greenville, Jonah Lentz had a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double and Evan Cianci collected 6 points.

* Lakeview 43, Reynolds 34 — At Stoneboro, the Sailors (11-3, 11-5) followed up Friday's overtime win against Rocky Grove with a Region 1 victory over the Raiders (5-8, 5-8).

Lakeview jumped out to a 14-7 lead after one quarter of play and was up 26-19 at the break. The Sailors posted a 17-15 scoring advantage in the 2nd half.

Gavin Grantham led Lakeview with 13 points, Isaac Lightcap scored 11, and Hunter Miller 8.

Aidan Mull had 9 points for Reynolds, Nick Loposky contributed 7 points, and Haydin McLaughlin collected 6 markers.

* Saegertown 68, Jamestown 58 — At Saegertown, Jaden Wilkins fired in 24 points to lead the Region 2 Panthers (12-8) past Region 1 Jamestown (6-14).

Saegertown outscored the Muskies 38-25 in the 1st half. Jamestown held a 33-30 scoring advantage in the 2nd half.

Brady Greco (4 treys) and Max Fuller both scored 15 points for Saegertown.

Cameron Keyser led Jamestown with 22 points, Peyton McElhinny bucketed 15, and Lucas Popielarcheck added 9 points.

* Farrell 56, West Middlesex 47 — At Farrell, Sian Rain rifled in 19 points as the Steelers (11-4, 11-7) rallied for the Region 1 win over the Big Reds (9-7, 9-10).

West Middlesex led 17-9 after 8 minutes and was up 27-21 at halftime. The Steelers outscored WM 14-6 in the 3rd quarter and 21-14 in the final frame.

The game was tied at 45-all late in the 4th quarter before Farrell put the game away with an 11-2 run.

Trian Holden, Omar Stewart, and Lamont Samuels all scored 9 points for Farrell.

Richie Preston led West Middlesex with 17 points, Logan Shrawder scored 8, and Hunter Smith and Luke Atterholt contributed 7 points each.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

* Lakeview 33, Sharpsville 28 — At Sharpsville, Coach Gary Burke's Lady Sailors (9-1, 13-3) clinched a share of the Region 4 title with the win over the Devils (6-4, 7-7).

It was the first league championship for the Lakeview girls program since 2007.

The Sailors' outscored Sharpsville 15-6 in the 2nd quarter to take a 21-12 halftime lead. The Devils posted a 16-12 scoring edge in the 2nd half.

Reese Gadsby had 12 points for Lakeview and Amber Sefton scored 11.

For Sharpsville, Chasie Fry, Breanna Hanley, and Tori Kimpan scored 6 points apiece.

* West Middlesex 65, Commodore Perry 29 — At Sheakleyville, the Ms. Reds (7-1, 8-3) followed up Friday's win over Farrell with the Region 1 rout of the Panthers (2-9, 2-9).

WM held a slim 12-10 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, but pulled away by outscoring CP 31-4 in the 2nd quarter.

Carlie Beatty posted a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double for WM, Taylor Tomko scored 12 points, Emily Anthony added 11 points and dished out 7 assists, and Emma Mild contributed 9 markers on a trio of treys.

Hailey Boozer led Commodore Perry with 9 points while Maddie Eber and Grace Jones contributed 7 points each.

* Kennedy Catholic 68, Rocky Grove 9 — At Hermitage, the Region 1 champion Lady Golden Eagles (13-0, 16-0) rolled to the Region 1 win.

Keegan McConahy, Bellah DiNardo, and Paris Gilmore scored 12 points each for KC and Isabella Bianco bucketed 10.

Abby Williams led Rocky Grove with 7 points.

* Reynolds 43, Jamestown 22 — At Jamestown, Mackenzie Herman scored 13 points to lead the Lady Raiders (5-7, 7-8) to the Region 1 win.

Halle Murcko added 10 points for Reynolds and Victoria Mull chipped in 5 points.

Staci Weimert drained 5 treys en route to a game-high 17 points for Jamestown (2-11, 2-13).

* Slippery Rock 52, Conneaut Area 20 — At Slippery Rock, the Region 5 champion Lady Rockets (12-0, 13-2) wrapped up an undefeated region schedule with a rout over CASH (5-6, 6-10).

Anna Kadlubek (17 points), Hallie Raabe (11), Bronwyn McCoy (8), and Maryann Ackerman (7) were the leading scorers for Slippery Rock.

Emma Stevenson had 6 points for CASH and Samantha Egli added 5.

District Championship

* South Range 41, Brookfield 30 — At South Range High School in Canfield, the Lady Raiders (22-4) captured their 2nd straight district title and the program's 10th overall.

South Range led 7-6 after 8 minutes and 16-11 at halftime. The Raiders outscored Brookfield 25-19 in the 2nd half.

Izzy Lamparty led South Range with 16 points, Mallory Vidman bucketed 9, and Lexi Giles chipped in 7 points.

Katie Logan had 9 points and 3 steals for the Lady Warriors (17-4), Audrey Reardon contributed 8 points, Sophia Hook collected 7 points and 9 rebounds, and Katie Gibson dished out 3 assists.

South Range advances to the Regional Semifinals on Tuesday to play Warrensville Heights at Cuyahoga Falls High School.
