Roundup: GC spikers sweep Hickory; Neshannock hockey team tops Connellsville

— Grove City 3, Hickory 0 — Host Grove City swept Hickory, 25-15, 25-21, 25-21 on Thursday night.

The Lady Eagles improved to 2-4 in the region, and 8-4 overall.

Hickory: Jaelyn Applegarth 6 digs; Paige Griffith 6 serving points, 4 blocks; Chloe Kovac 5 serves; Emily Duncan 8 serving points, 12 assists; Madeline Huff 10 serving points. Grove City: Hailey Conway 9 digs; Britney Kuhn 5 digs; Carlie Reynolds 15 assists, 6 digs; Cassie Smith 11 kills; Delaney Callahan 7 kills; Brooke Hovis 14 serving points (5 aces); Abby Berry 15 assists, 6 serving points; Brooke Sciullo 8 kills.

JV: Grove City, 25-19, 25-11.

— West Middlesex 3, Mercer 0 — The Ms. Reds rolled in Thursday's match, 25-8, 25-21, 25-8.

West Middlesex: Stats were published in Friday's edition of The Herald. Mercer: Stats were reported to The Herald on Friday morning, but no player had 5 or more in any statistical category.

JV: West Middlesex, 25-9, 25-14.

ICE HOCKEY

— Neshannock 8, Connellsville 2 — The Lancers beat Connellsville recently to even their early-season record to 1-1.

The Lancers jumped out to a quick start by scoring five goals in the first period. Gio Valentine started the scoring on the power play with help from brother Emilio Valentine and Marcello Cerasi.

Tommy Malvar (Kennedy Catholic) made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal. Patrick Cionni kept the scoring going with assists going to Lex Moses (Hickory) and Colton Chamberlain.

Less than a minute later Cerasi found the back of the net with help from Logan Quigley (Grove City) and Malvar. Emilio Valentine closed out the first-period scoring with help from brother Gio.

Micah DeJulia (Hickory) scored the next two goals for the Lancers, the first on a power play with an assist going to Moses and the next on a short-handed goal to put Neshannock up 7-0.

The Valentine brothers teamed up again to close out the scoring for Neshannnock as Gio tallied his 2nd of the night with Emilio assisting.

Riley Mastowski (Kennedy Catholic) stopped 17 of 19 shots to record the win in goal for Neshannock.

The Lancers, who won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) Class B title last season, are back in action at 8:25 p.m. Monday night when they battle Bishop Canevin at Hess Ice Rink in New Castle.
