Role of Blockade Runners in NC during the Civil War
Exciting adventure, imminent peril, and boring quarantine — all for incredible profits were what blockade runners and commerce raiders experienced running in and out of the Cape Fear River during the Civil War. Jim McKee, a life-long student of history and a graduate of Greensboro College, will discuss the role of blockade runners in North Carolina during the Civil War.
Blockade runners were slim, sleek ships designed to slip through blockades and outrun Union warships. Many of the shipwrecks off the Carolina coast are blockade runners. McKee will talk about the design and use of these ships and the role they played in battles off the coast.

Ocean Isle Beach Movie in the Park
Come and enjoy movies under the sky with friends and family this summer as Ocean Isle Beach host Movies in the Park. “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.” Living in suburban Los Angeles, Alexander Cooper often feels left out by his family: baby brother Trevor; elder siblings Anthony and Emily; and their parents, Kelly and Ben. The movie begins at sunset (8-10 p.m.) Wednesday, Aug. 10 at Town Creek Park, 11 E. Second St. (weather permitting). Food vendor on site. Free admission. Bring a chair or blanket.
‘Bingo - The Winning Musical’
Who thought that a game of bingo could produce such hilarity and excitement?
Brunswick Little Theatre presents “Bingo - The Winning Musical,” directed by Debbie Skillman. The fun new musical comedy has laughs and heart a-plenty. Musical numbers run the gamut from pop ballad, to gospel, to country to a torch song. The fun begins as bingo diehards and best friends forever Vern, Honey and Patsy brave the worst storm in Hamerin County history to attend the yearly celebration of the birth of bingo and to honor its founder Edwin S. Lowe.
To provide the perfect atmosphere, all performances will take place in an actual bingo hall at the Oak Island Moose Lodge, 4239 Long Beach Road, Southport. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 11-13 and at 3 p.m. Aug. 14. Tickets are $25 and are available at https://brunswicklittletheatre.com/ or at Ricky Evans Gallery, 211 N. Howe St., Southport. Southport Summer Concert series
