How the Roland-Story girls knocked off Clear Lake and boys basketball and wrestling both prevailed

The Roland-Story girls basketball team upset No. 10 (Class 3A) Clear Lake, both Norse teams took down Southeast Valley and the Norsemen wrestlers easily defeated Nevada in a Heart of Iowa Conference dual last week.

The Roland-Story girls, ranked 12th in 3A, handed the Lions a 36-34 setback Jan. 13 at Clear Lake. The victory avenged a 48-39 loss to the Lions last season.

The Roland-Story girls also pounded Southeast Valley by a 62-36 score Jan. 10 at Story City. The two non-conference wins put the Norse girls at 9-3 on the season.

The Roland-Story boys did just enough in the second half to outlast Southeast Valley by a 47-44 score after scoring just 17 points in the first half. The victory put the Norsemen at 10-1 on the season.

The Norse wrestling team cruised to a 69-12 victory over Nevada. The win put them at 12-3 in duals on the season.

Here is what we learned from a perfect week of competition by the Norse:

Defense gets Norse girls past Lions

The Roland-Story girls got their revenge on Clear Lake by dominating the defensive side of the ball for three quarters.

The Norse girls gave up fewer than eight points in three of the four quarters of play.

After taking a 16-13 lead at the half Roland-Story slipped up defensively in the third quarter. That allowed Clear Lake to move in front by one point heading into the final eight minutes.

But the Norse clamped back down in the fourth quarter. Clear Lake only scored four points over the final eight minutes, allowing Roland-Story to pull in front for the win.

Madi Bauer capped off an outstanding week with 11 points and five assists for Roland-Story in the win. Reagan Barkema had seven points and nine rebounds, Reece Johnson seven points, three boards and three assists, Claire Truesdell five points and three rebounds, Elizabeth Ihle three points and four boards and Kamryn Lande three points for Roland-Story.

Girls cruise past Jaguars

The Roland-Story girls made sure Southeast Valley had no chance against them Jan. 10.

The Norse only shot 37 % from the field and 46 % from the line. But they made eight 3-pointers, outrebounded the Jaguars 33-21 after destroying them on the offensive glass (16-2) and forced 24 turnovers.

Barkema posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and she also had four assists and three steals. Bauer went for 11 points and three rebounds, Ihle 10 points and three assists, Truesdell six points and Johnson four points, six assists, six steals and four rebounds.

Madison Gelse also scored four points, Lande, Samantha Elsberry and Makenna Carlson three apiece and Ali Charlson two. Alex Kitchen had 13 points and eight rebounds and Breck Mills 12 points and five rebounds for the Jaguars, who fell to 3-9.

Boys get it done in the second half

The Roland-Story boys won their second in a row after a tough 48-45 loss to Iowa Falls-Alden coming back from Christmas break.

But it wasn't easy.

The Norsemen were down 18-17 at the half. They came back to take a 34-32 lead after three quarters then held off the Jaguars in the fourth quarter for their 10th victory.

Roland-Story won despite allowing Southeast Valley to shoot 50 % from the field. The Norsemen forced 17 turnovers, only committed nine and made 8 of 11 free throws compared to an 0 of 3 showing at the line from Southeast Valley.

Iowa football recruit Aaron Graves had 23 points for Southeast Valley. Roland-Story's Isaiah Naylor countered with 23 points and three steals, Jonovan Wilkinson chipped in 10 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists and Ben Greenfield eight points and four rebounds.

Wrestlers pick up three pins in win

Roland-Story only needed to win four matches on the mat against Nevada. The Norsemen received seven forfeits.

Ian Tripp pinned Nevada's Caiden Woten in one minute, 45 seconds at 182 pounds, Noah Wakefield took care of Dakota Hastings in 1:28 at 120 and Logan Powers took down Christian Decoske in 1:48 at 138 for Roland-Story. Tristan Conley-McCarthy picked up Roland-Story's other win on the mat with a 6-0 decision over Nevada's Zachary Martinez at 152.

Hesston Johnson (160), Eli Thorson (170), Jaxson Kadolph (195), Aaron Peyton (220), Devin Webb (113), Colin Streit (126), Isaac Hall (132) and Christian Eslick (145) each received a forfeit.
