ROCKFORD — A business specializing in tasty dessert treats is opening a storefront in the city’s downtown.

TNT Funnel Cakes plans to open a store at 201 W. State St. on Sept. 1, according to Tony Washington, who co-owns the business with his wife, Ashley.

“It’s a blessing,” Washington said. “ We’re proud to bring something this wonderful to downtown Rockford. People can have our delicious funnel cakes 12 months a year."

Tentative hours for the business are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. six days a week, according to Washington.

TNT Funnel Cakes has been a popular vendor at Rockford City Market since 2021.

The business features funnel cakes loaded with toppings ranging from Oreo cookies and s’mores to red velvet and pineapple upside-down cake.

TNT Funnel Cakes is moving into the location that previously housed a Subway restaurant, which closed for good on May 10 after 32 years in business.

The Washington's will lease the ground floor space of the Richardson Building from landlord B & B Properties, consisting of Don Bissell and Marge and Kyle Bevers, who live on the second and third floors of the historic property.

"These people are so nice and such hard workers so we're happy for the community," Marge Bevers said. "We hope that, once again, that space will become a gathering spot, especially for those people in the senior high rise, the hotel and all of the buildings around here that now house residential. We hope that this will become a place where people go to visit."

Bevers said she's diabetic and usually avoids sugary foods but confessed she sampled a dessert from TNT Funnel Cakes last weekend.

"I had one bite and I have to say this is going to be a test of my willpower," she said.
