Rochester's Barlow Plaza sold for $20.15 million
Jun. 22—A California firm on Monday paid $20.15 million for Barlow Plaza, one of Rochester's most high-profile shopping centers.
The 40-year-old shopping center was purchased by the San Francisco-based Glen Una Management Co. under the generic corporate umbrella of Barlow Rochester Property, LLC. Glen Una's website states that the firm owns and manages 2.1 million square feet of retail space, primarily grocery-anchored shopping centers, in cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Washington D.C., among others.
The sprawling center, anchored by a Hy-Vee grocery store and the Mestads Bridal & Formal Wear store, stands on the corner of Civic Center Drive and 11th Avenue Northwest.
United Properties Development of Minneapolis sold the shopping center, after owning it for four years and upgrading it with some physical improvements.
United Properties purchased it from Steve Barlow for $16.7 million in 2017.
This is the latest milestone in the shopping center's history in Rochester.
The first piece of the center was Barlow Foods. Stephen B. Barlow, father of Steve Barlow, launched the ground-breaking grocery as a 26,000-square-foot store in 1969. The Barlow Plaza shopping center was later built and opened in 1981 with the store as its anchor.
In 1990, the grocery store expanded to 78,000 square feet, becoming Rochester's then-largest supermarket. It became a Hy-Vee store in 1997.
