ROC Cafe and Bakery reopens to public Tuesday

Oct. 24—It's back to baking for the culinary students at the Regional Occupational Center, which will reopen its cafe and bakery to the public on Tuesday.

Opened last year, the full-service restaurant is run by students in the culinary arts program of the Kern High School District's Regional Occupational Center, which offers skilled trade classes in 15 different fields.

At the ROC Cafe and Bakery, students learn real-life skills by focusing on culinary, baking and hospitality, KHSD reported in a news release. They rotate between restaurant cuisine, baking and management roles.

Breakfast options include a brioche breakfast sandwich ($9) with Black Forest ham, bacon, fried egg, avocado and white cheddar; breakfast burrito ($9) with chorizo, potatoes, bacon, cilantro, scrambled eggs, white cheddar and house salsa; and French toast ($7) made on house-made brioche bread with fresh berries, maple syrup and Nutella.

For lunch, there are three types of salad — Caesar, Greek and Thai (all $7) — as well as an ROC Burger ($12), pastrami sandwich ($11), grilled chicken on ciabatta ($12) and slow-roasted pork panini ($12).

The bakery serves signature cakes ($5) such as carrot, red velvet or Sayra's famous chocolate cake, named for ROC instructor Sayra Ovalles, along with gourmet cookies ($3), cheesecake ($6) with a seasonal topping and much more.

The cafe and bakery serve breakfast from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and lunch from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. The cafe alone is also open from 10:30 a.m. to noon those days.

On Fridays, the cafe is open from 8:30 to 10 a.m.

Hours could change without notice, KHSD said. Diners are encouraged to call ahead at 661-396-4920 to make sure the cafe is open and to make a reservation.

The ROC Cafe and Bakery is located at 501 S. Mount Vernon Ave.
