Robert Robinson's two-out RBI in bottom of the 10th lifts FAMU over Prairie View in SWAC Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Robert Robinson hit a clutch, two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Florida A&M baseball a 5-4 win against Prairie View in the SWAC Tournament here Wednesday.

The Rattlers (27-28) rallied from a 4-1 deficit after 7-1/2 innings, tied the game in the ninth on a safety squeeze and won it an inning later on three consecutive singles with two outs.

FAMU advances to Thursday's second-round game against the winner between Southern and Jackson State Wednesday. The start time is undetermined.

WEATHER DELAY

Inclement weather delayed the start of the double-elimination tournament at Regions Field.

The FAMU-Prairie View game was scheduled to open the tourney at 10 a.m. but was delayed more than two hours.

Bethune-Cookman and Grambling State was the scheduled second game Wednesday, followed by Southern-Jackson State. The third game between Alabama State-Texas Southern was rescheduled for Thursday morning.

The Rattlers started off quickly against the Panthers, taking a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by designated hitter Ty Hanchey. Hanchey led FAMU's 12-hit attack with a 4-for-5 performance punctuated by a pair of doubles and two RBI.

The Panthers tied the game 1-1 on an RBI ground out in the fifth against FAMU starter Hunter Viets. Prairie View knocked Viets out of the game with a three-run eighth to surge in front 4-1.

Veits allowed 10 hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts in 7.1 innings.

FAMU pulled within 4-3 in its home half of the eighth on a Hanchey RBI double and a LJ Bryant sacrifice fly.

RALLY HATS

Adam Haidermota led off the Rattlers' ninth with a walk. Pinch runner Jalen Niles advanced to second base on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out. Will Brown, a late defensive replacement in center field, then executed a safety squeeze bunt to score Niles and tie the game at 4-4.

Ben Krizen (W, 2-0) - the Rattlers' third pitcher - worked around a lead-off double to set down the Panthers in the 10th.

After two quick outs, FAMU strung together hits from Hanchey to left field, Bryant to center field and Robinson through the right side into right field to win the game.

Prairie View right fielder Jayden Williams' throw to the plate was wide, allowing a sliding Hanchey to easily score from second base.

Jared Weber had three hits and Grant Rowell a pair for the Rattlers. Zach Morea allowed one earned run in 1.1 innings in relief of Viets.

FAMU pitchers combined on 10 strikeouts and allowed just three walks.
