Rise & Shine! Your Newport County guide for July 2-4

Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is July 2, the 183rd day of the year — 182 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1964, during a televised ceremony, President Lyndon Johnson signed into the law the historic Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

Here & Now

• Not to dampen your spirits ahead of what's shaping up to be a knock-your-socks-off holiday weekend, but I have some bad news: Rise & Shine! is taking a bit of a hiatus as the Barretts head to the hills of Pennsylvania for a family reunion — with a trip to Herseypark thrown into the mix.

Worry not, though, as you'll still get a newsletter sent to your inbox, and from what I'm told, Editor Will Richmond (who will be taking the reins) has a trick or two up his sleeve. If all goes according to plan, you'll hear from me Thursday morning. So have a great week!

• Even though I won't be in the 401 area code, I'll be periodically checking my email and keeping up with all of the happenings via The Daily News app (shameless plug).

Some things to watch for: The Middletown Town Council meets Tuesday evening, and among the items on the agenda is an update from the town administrator about various projects. On Wednesday, the Newport Beach Commission will get an update on the "status of Carousel research."

• The Portsmouth Police Department is actively looking for a 31-year-old "endangered man" last seen in the area of Boyd's Lane on June 28. Learn more here.

• There won't be any fireworks at Esocbar Farm in Portsmouth this weekend, but there will be a bonfire on Island Park beach on Sunday. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to benefit the food bank at St. John's Lodge, which is really struggling right now. Learn more about the event here.

• If you're like me and planning to travel this holiday weekend, the Rhode Island Police Chiefs' Association has put together a list of safety tips. Check them out here.

• From the inbox: Speaking of road trips, VacationIdea.com has put Newport at No. 1 on its list of the 25 Best New England Day Trips. Find the full list here.

• The state Department of Transportation has provided its roadwork schedule for next week in Newport County and throughout the state. You can find it here.
