Rise & Shine! I’m Scott Barrett, managing editor for The Daily News, and today is May 20, the 140th day of the year — 225 days remain in 2022. On this day in 1873, businessman Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis are given a patent to create work pants reinforced with metal rivets, marking the birth of one of the world’s most famous garments: blue jeans.

Here & Now

• Newport Life magazine will live on.

After it was announced earlier in 2022 the Gannett-owned publication would cease operations, a local investor group stepped forward and purchased it. The sale was made public in a press release issued Wednesday afternoon.

Longtime Aquidneck Island resident Katelyn McSherry, who had once worked in the magazine’s marketing and events department, will now be the publisher. The 31-year-old is a graduate of Portsmouth High School and the University of Rhode Island.

I caught up with her on Thursday to ask how she and her editorial team — you might recognize one of the names — plan to put their stamp on the magazine that started back in 1993. Read my story here.

• In his weekly Spare Change column, Jim Gillis writes that media personalities like Tucker Carlson and conspiracy theories are partly to blame for the recent massacre in Buffalo. Read his column here.

• The local real estate market continues to be hot. Case in point: The median list price for a Newport County home in April was $819,900, up 2.6% from a month earlier. Get the full breakdown here.

• It came down to one match between rivals Portsmouth and Middletown, the winner earning the final automatic berth into the state golf tournament. The Islanders prevailed, but not all is lost for the Patriots. Sports reporter Steve Rogers has the story.

• Speaking of high school sports, congratulations to Portsmouth High pitcher Cam Ruggieri, who with more than 3,450 votes was tabbed as The Newport Daily News Athlete of the Week. The freshman (who come to find out is a neighbor of mine) pitched a no-hitter in leading the Patriots to a 5-0 win over Barrington last Sunday.

• You can find the latest Newport County sports standouts with the Stars of the Day.

• As part of his senior project, high school student Christian Claytor is hosting a "Movie Night for Animals in Need" tonight from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Portsmouth High School auditorium. You can learn more here.

• Tennis anyone? Starting May 31, the Tiverton Recreation Department will host an all-levels group at Town Farm from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Registration is requested and can be completed here.

• The Newport Secret Garden Tour is seeking volunteers for its upcoming event June 24-26 in the city's Point neighborhood. You can learn more here.

• There seemed to be a little confusion as to whether — with the new meter system installed — parking in front of the Newport U.S. Post Office on Thames Street. It is, the city confirmed in a social media post.
