If this is the last time Texas travels to Lubbock, Texas Tech gave them a reason to remember the trip.

The Red Raiders also provided a new crop of fans memories they'll keep for a lifetime.

Krishon Merriweather forced a fumble, which Reggie Pearson, Jr. recovered, setting up Trey Wolff's 20-yard game-winning field goal in overtime to help Texas Tech top No. 22 Texas 37-34 in front of a sold-out crowd Saturday of 60,975 fans inside Jones AT&T Stadium.

“It’s tough to ever compare any game to that until we win the Big 12 and play in the playoffs,” Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said. ”That game was iconic just for so many reasons. But I will tell you I think that a lot of people, 60,000 people will remember where they were Sept. 24 and will remmeber how hard the Red Raiders fought to get the win. Once again, beating an in-state rival, and beating a ranked team at home — that’s a big deal.”

What looked to be the go-ahead drive started at the Red Raiders own 17, which was set up by the defense that forced a third-straight Longhorns punt and helped TTU recover from a 31-17 deficit with 4:27 left in the third quarter.

“There was a point there — it was 31-17 — they could have given up, but they didn’t,” McGuire said, alluding to his team fighting back from two scores down. “We asked them to come out of halftime and to just keep fighting and good things were going to happen.”

From there, Donovan Smith marched the offense down the field to the UT 40 before throwing an errant pass and appeared to be facing a third-and-6.

But a defensive holding call, assessed to Anthony Cook, pushed the ball to the 30 and injected new life into the drive.

That goes with Myles Price catching a career-high 13 passes for 98 yards. The last converted converted a fourth-and-3 from the 50-yard line. Six plays later, Wolff kicked the go-ahead, 45-yard field goal before making an even bigger conversion in overtime.

The Longhorns needed four plays before Bert Auburn connected on a 48-yarder as time expired to send the contest to overtime knotted at 34-all.

“Those are the moments that we work for,” said Wolff, who made field goals of 27, 45 and 20 in the win. “We were really happy to get in that situation, that opportunity because that’s what every kicker dreams of. … Saw how much time we had left and slowed down on the celebrations because we’ve been in a situation or two with Texas where we gotta wait till the clock says 0:00.

“That’s what we did. Luckily, we got that opportunity again. .. Left me with an opportunity to help the team.”

It was a battle before that to even things up.

Texas Tech had a chance to knot things up earlier — facing fourth-and-goal from the UT 2-yard line — but unlike the first go-around earlier in the contest, Donovan Smith was stuffed for zero yards and Texas held onto a 31-24 lead with 10:18 left in the contest.

Yet, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the Red Raider defense — which played solid down the stretch — forced a Longhorns three-and-out and the Texas Tech offense started from the UT 30 following a good punt return.

The Red Raiders didn't miss out on their chance this time, needing five plays, as Smith connected on a 19-yard touchdown pass that brought the home crowd to a fever pitch as the score was tied at 31-31 with 7:54 to play.

Prior to the late-game dramatics, SaRodorick Thompson made it a one-score deficit after rushing up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown to put the Red Raiders within 31-24 at the 1:55 mark of the third quarter.

The final period turned out to be a roller coaster of emotions for both teams, while the first half was a different story.

Hudson Card, who again started for the injured Quinn Ewers (SC joint sprain), led the Longhorns down the field on their first possession — forging a three-play, 62-yard drive that was highlighted by a 35-yard touchdown pass to Keilan Robinson for the 7-0 lead at the 13:36 mark of the first quarter.

Texas Tech answered, though, thanks to clutch plays by Smith.

The former Frenship standout had key conversions on third-and-1 (Smith 10-yard run), fourth-and-7 (Smith 7-yard pass to Xavier White) and fourth-and-goal (Smith 4-yard run) to cap off an 18-play drive.

On fourth-and-goal from the 4, Smith executed a zone-read keeper to the right side and was pulled down into the end zone to knot the contest up at 7-7 with 7:55 left in the first.

The Red Raiders defense yielded a field goal, which could have been the start of a turning point as the Red Raiders forged another scoring drive, needing 13 plays and 83 yards to take the lead.

The offense, operating from 21 personnel, executed as Tahj Brooks was left open on the left sideline for a 17-yard touchdown pass from Smith to provide the Red Raiders with a 14-10 lead with 12:06 before the midway point.

Reggie Pearson, Jr. appeared to create a game-changing play, intercepting a Card pass deep down the left sideline as he ranged over to pick it off and return the ball to his offense.

Texas Tech was unable to take advantage of the opportunity at the critical juncture, sputtering and punting the ball back to the Longhorns.

Texas, with new life following a 26-yard boot by Red Raiders punter Austin McNamara, marched down the field and scored.

Card — dodging a sack by Tech defensive end Josiah Pierre — tossed a 39-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy, who got behind the defense and waltzed into the end zone to put UT up 17-14 with 6:07 left before the break.

It marked the first of two-straight possessions the Longhorns finished with touchdowns — including a 12-play, 82-yard drive capped off by Bijan Robinson recording an 8-yard rushing touchdown toward a 24-14 advantage at halftime.

The last two quarters saw both teams trade the lead in what was the third straight game the Red Raiders have played against a nationally-ranked opponent.

Bijan Robinson finished with 101 yards and two touchdowns while Hudson Card ended tossing for 277 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Smith threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions — after throwing five in his previous two contests — while running for 42 and another score. Thompson had 70 yards and one score on the ground.

It's been awhile: The last time Texas Tech defeated the Longhorns at home is when the Red Raiders downed then-No. 1 UT thanks to a last-second catch and touchdown run by wide receiver Michael Crabtree back in 2008.

What's next: Texas Tech (3-1, 1-0) is scheduled to take on Kansas State at 11 a.m. Oct. 1. Texas (2-2, 0-1) is slated to host West Virginia at a time yet to be announced.
