Richmond Heights Police Department swears in new sergeant

Jul. 2—Kwan Hunt, an auxiliary officer for the Richmond Heights Police Department, has been promoted to police sergeant.

Hunt previously served as a U.S. Marine. He then went on to work beside the police both as a volunteer for its auxiliary unit as well as as the director of public safety for the Richmond Mall for 17 years.

"When I worked for the mall, I garnered a strong friendship with the different police officers there and through that relationship they asked me to join the auxiliary force," Hunt said at the June 28 Richmond Heights City Council meeting in which he was sworn in as a sergeant. "I'm glad that I did it."

Hunt said that he would like to thank Lt. Denise Debiase for helping him throughout his time within the department.

Due to Hunt's background he is able to provide specialized training to his fellow officers.

"Because of the training and certifications that I have I was able to become a trainer for our unit once I joined auxiliary," he said. "I assist a lot of guys specialized training such as the use of handcuffs, mace and other equipment."

Hunt said he hopes to make use of his promotion to continue to serve the community and assist the department in any way he can.

"It's a job I enjoy doing, I enjoy working with the public and helping people out is a job I find very fulfilling," he said. "I look at it as another step in community policing. It is the next step to be able to better the relationship I have with my community and help out wherever I can."
