Rian Johnson has revealed a scrapped idea he had for The Last Jedi – and Star Wars fans are divided.
The filmmaker, who directed Episode VIII in 2017, made the revelation on Twitter in reply to a fan on Tuesday (1 December).
Johnson was asked if he ever planned for Anakin Skywalker’s Force ghost to meet his son, Luke (Mark Hamill), or Rey (Daisy Ridley) in the film.
It turns out he did "briefly", but ultimately decided against including the moment as "Luke's relationship was with Vader, not really Anakin".
In the long-running franchise, Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader.
He added that "it seemed like it would complicate things more than that moment allowed", stating: “Yoda felt like the more impactful teacher.”
This admission has now split Star Wars fans right down the middle with many praising Johnson for his decision and others accusing him of "making no sense".
"How did this guy work for Star Wars? Hasn’t got a clue," one fan wrote, with another adding: "Man's acting like Anakin and Luke would not have communicated over the 30 years after ROTJ so Luke gets to know Anakin rather than Vader."
However, in support of Johnson, a fan replied: “As cool as it might have been to see Luke interact with Anakin, it would have felt out of place for this scene."
"Yoda was the perfect choice to deliver the advice here."
Briefly for the tree burning scene, but luke’s relationship was with Vader not really anakin, which seemed like it would complicate things more than that moment allowed. Yoda felt like the more impactful teacher for that moment.

Luke only briefly met the REAL Anakin in his final moments. That is not a relationship, that's a tragedy. Rian understood this, and I once again question wtf movies you Rian haters were all watching to not interpret them that way. Rian Johnson DOES understand Star Wars. (2/2)

I hope that now that Rian Johnson finally exposed himself about the fact he didn’t understand anything about Luke and Vader/Anakin people will open the eyes about the fact luke’s character was destroyed in TLJ
