Revisiting Tennessee’s 2005 overtime win at LSU

No. 8 Tennessee (4-0, 1-0 SEC) will play at LSU (4-1, 2-0 SEC) Saturday in Week 6.

Kickoff between the Vols and Tigers is slated for noon EDT. ESPN will televise the Southeastern Conference matchup from Tiger Stadium.

Saturday will mark the 34th meeting between the two schools. The Vols hold a 20-10 advantage in the all-time series. The teams have played to three ties.

Each week, Vols Wire will look at one of Tennessee’s memorable games against its upcoming opponent.

This installment will revisit No. 10 Tennessee’s 30-27 overtime victory at No. 3 LSU Sept. 26, 2005.

The game was postponed and played on a Monday due to Hurricane Rita.

LSU led 21-0. Kenneth Hollis intercepted Tennessee’s Erik Ainge on the Vols’ 3-yard line and returned it for a touchdown with 6 minutes, 55 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Tennessee trailed, 21-7, after Rick Clausen completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Bret Smith in the third quarter.

LSU led 24-7 after Chris Jackson kicked a 42-yard field goal.

The Vols scored 24 unanswered points over the final 15 minutes. Clausen and Gerald Riggs Jr. each recorded 1-yard touchdown rushing attempts.

James Wilhoit kicked a 28-yard field goal with 2:02 left in regulation.

The Tigers scored first in overtime on a 31-yard field goal before Riggs Jr.’s touchdown propelled Tennessee to victory.

Riggs Jr. recorded 89 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the contest.
