BAYSHORE HIRES SANDERS Coronavirus Florida: Bayshore High hires Sanders as football coach

It followed with a number of announcements of prominent area coaches joining the Bruins' program.

Entering his fourth season as coach, Jamaal Sanders is surrounding himself with quality talent.

Brion Carnes is the quarterbacks coach. A graduate and four-year starter at quarterback for Manatee High, Carnes went on to play at Nebraska. He also played in the Indoor Football League.

Rickie Simmons is the offensive coordinator. A Manatee High graduate, Simmons was the wide receiver coach and pass game coordinator at Sarasota High from 2021-22.

Reshard Simmons is the defensive coordinator. Simmons graduated from Manatee High and was the Sarasota High defensive line coach and defensive coordinator from 2019-22.

Tory T.K. King is the offensive line coach. King is a Bayshore alum and was on the coaching staff at Lincoln Academy.

And Bayshore may not be finished adding to the staff.

The Bruins are hoping the additions are a boon to the program that has floundered lately.

"Honestly, I've been after those guys for a while, but they were with Sarasota and tied down to Sarasota," Sanders said. "So when the opportunity came up, I asked them again. We mulled around. We had a few conversations between meetings. We came to the conclusion to give it a go."

What can the new coaches provide?

"A, it's a bunch of young guys, so they are going to bring the energy," Sanders said. "They are going to go out and show the kids what they are talking about, instead of just being able to tell them. They can model a lot of what we are trying to get them to do.

"And just their experience. They're young guys, but they've been around the game for a while. They've been coaching also. It's a different outlook from the way we've been doing things. To get minds together like that, you can bounce ideas off each other. And that old saying: iron sharpens iron."

Sanders had seven coaches on his staff last season.

"We'll fill the whole coaching staff this year with some of the guys we just hired and some of the guys I had last year," Sanders said.

Sanders also hopes the boost in the coaching staff equals a boost in the roster. The Bruins lately have had one of the slimmest rosters among area teams.

"We're hoping to put a good product on the field and hopefully we'll be able to get some more kids out," Sanders said.

Bayshore has not fared well on the football field lately. In the past 19 seasons, the Bruins are 54-129 (42% winning percentage). Bayshore has not had a winning season − it was .500 in 2011 and 2018 − since 2003, when it went 10-2 under current Bethune-Cookman University coach Raymond Woodie Jr.

Sanders is not finished adding to his coaching staff.

"I've got a few more surprises," he said. "I'm going to hold off on them until spring football start.

"But these are the guys we needed to get in to get them working with the kids as soon as possible."

It could be a resurgence for the Bayshore High football program.
