Residents can dispose of expired, unneeded drugs at Lane Community College event

Lane County residents can safely discard of pills and patches at a free drug takeback event Saturday at Lane Community College, hosted by LCC's Public Safety department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

People can bring their expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and patches for disposal from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the west side of Building 19 in LCC's main campus at 4000 E. 30th Ave. in Eugene. The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked to attendees, according to an LCC news release.

Pills or patches will be accepted. Items that will not be allowed for disposal include: intravenous solutions, injectables, inhalers, syringes, chemotherapy medications, vaping devices that have batteries that cannot be removed and medical waste. Those items are prohibited due to the potential hazard posed by blood-borne pathogens and require special disposal, according to the release.

Medications can be dropped off in their original containers or any other containers.

The goal of the disposal drive is to prevent pill abuse and theft. Medicines that linger in home cabinets are "highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse," the announcement states.
