Reports: Carl Crawford sued for $1M over drowning death at his Texas home
The father of a 5-year-old boy who drowned in a pool at Carl Crawford’s Texas home is suing Crawford for $1 million, according to multiple reports.
Liban Hersi is seeking “compensation for the loss of the care, maintenance, support services, advice, counsel and reasonable contributions he would have received from his son Kasen Hersi had he lived,” according to court documents obtained by Houston’s ABC 13.
The incident occurred at the former MLB outfielder’s Houston home on May 16.
Woman who tried to save boy drowned too
Kasen was attending a gathering at Crawford’s home with a friend of his mother’s and her two children, according to police. He drowned in Crawford’s pool, as did 25-year-old Bethany Lartigue, who jumped in the pool to try to save him.
According to KHOU 11, people were gathered at Crawford’s home to shoot videos for his music label 1501 Certified Entertainment. The lawsuit accuses Crawford of failing to take “reasonable and necessary steps” to prevent Hersi from accessing the pool.
Crawford’s response
Crawford responded to the incident in May.
“My heart’s heavy,” Crawford wrote on Instagram. “The tragic events that occurred at my home will be with me forever.”
Crawford reportedly attempted to revive both Kasen and Lartigue. They were later declared dead at the Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital.
The lawsuit also seeks "compensation for mental anguish, emotional pain and torment” of Kasen’s death.
Crawford, 38, played 15 seasons in MLB with the Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. He last played for the Dodgers in 2016.
