Coutinho joins Bayern Munich on loan from Barcelona
Philippe Coutinho will spend the season with Bayern Munich on a season-long loan, the German giants announced on Monday.
Catalan radio station RAC1 initially reported the move on August 16, while the AFP reported confirmation of the deal from Barcelona director Guillermo Amor.
The 27-year-old attacking midfielder had fallen out of favor at Barcelona and didn’t make Friday’s squad for the La Liga-opening loss to Athletic Bilbao.
Coutinho’s move to Munich might complicate Barcelona’s reported pursuit of Neymar, as Coutinho was believed to be one of the players Barca would make available to Paris Saint-Germain in a deal.
Now, Coutinho joins Bayern’s wealth of wide talent, which includes fellow loanee Ivan Perisic of Inter Milan, as well as Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, Thomas Muller and Corentin Tolisso, who started Bayern’s Bundesliga opener Friday against Hertha Berlin on the wings. Canadian international and former Vancouver Whitecap Alphonso Davies is also an option.
With club legends Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery departed this summer, Bayern has scoured far and wide for attackers, and Coutinho fits that bill. Better than he did for Barcelona, at least, as he’ll try to revive a career that flashed great promise at Liverpool but dipped last campaign in Spain.
