Report: Conor McGregor under investigation for sexual assault in Ireland

MMA fighter Conor McGregor, who announced his retirement from fighting late Monday night, is being investigated in Ireland for sexual assault, according to the New York Times.

The victim, an unnamed woman, reported the alleged assault to police in December. She says it took place at the Beacon Hotel in Dublin, a place where McGregor reportedly stays. According to the Times, police obtained closed circuit camera footage from the hotel, as well as evidence from the room McGregor booked.

McGregor was reportedly arrested in January and questioned in connection to the allegations, but was released and has not been charged. This is common in Ireland, and the New York Times reported that the investigation is continuing.

It has been rumored for months that McGregor was involved in this case of the “unnamed sportsman,” but Irish laws prevent media in that country from reporting the name of anyone accused of rape unless they’re convicted. Media outlets in Ireland have been reporting on this case since it broke, but have not been able to name McGregor as the accused.

McGregor has only fought twice since 2016, and only one of those fights was in mixed martial arts. He fought Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match in 2017, which he lost. His most recent UFC fight was in October 2018, when he fought and lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov. McGregor was suspended for six months and fined $50,000 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for his role in a post-fight brawl started by Nurmagomedov.

More recently, McGregor was arrested and charged with felony strong-armed robbery and misdemeanor criminal mischief after allegedly taking a fan’s phone and stomping on it outside of a Miami nightclub. The incident was caught on video.

It’s unknown if McGregor’s retirement is connected to his sexual assault allegation being made public. McGregor retired back in 2016, only to take it back two days later.
