Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Ryan Borucki got some good news and some bad news Friday.

The bad news: He will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing a procedure on his left elbow, according to TSN’s Scott Mitchell.

The good news: The left-hander does not need Tommy John surgery, and is expected to be ready for spring training in 2020.

Borucki appeared in just two games for Toronto this season, getting pounded for 10 runs in his 6.2 innings of work.

Coming off a strong rookie season in which he recorded a 3.87 ERA, Borucki was expected to be a mainstay in the Blue Jays’ 2019 rotation. Instead, the 25-year-old was injured during spring training and didn’t make his season debut until July 22. He landed back on the injured list with elbow inflammation on July 31.

While the news doesn’t come as much of a surprise with the Blue Jays well out of playoff contention and more focused on ensuring a full return to health for Borucki, it does leave Toronto’s rotation awfully thin and uninspiring for the next eight weeks.

With veterans Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez moved at the trade deadline, plus injuries to the likes of Matt Shoemaker, Clayton Richard and Clay Buchholz, the Blue Jays have been forced to throw a number of options at the wall in the hopes something sticks. The inconsistent group of Trent Thornton, Jacob Waguespack, Thomas Pannone and Sean Reid-Foley is what manager Charlie Montoyo is currently working with.
