Report: Becky Hammon among candidates interviewing for Pacers opening
San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon is among several candidates interviewing for the Indiana Pacers coaching vacancy, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports.
The job became available when the Pacers fired fourth-year head coach Nate McMillan following a first-round playoff sweep to the Miami Heat.
Hammon broke ground as the first female assistant head coach in the NBA when the Spurs hired her in 2014. If hired, she would be the first woman to coach an NBA team. Hammon previously interviewed for the Milwaukee Bucks head coaching opening in 2018.
Prior to coaching, Hammon played 16 seasons in the WNBA, making six All-Star teams.
Pacers casting a wide net
Indiana’s search is in its preliminary stages, and they’re seeking permission to speak with a number of candidates including former Sacramento Kings and Memphis Grizzlies head coach Dave Joeger and Brooklyn Nets assistant Jacque Vaughn, according to the report. Vaughn coached the Nets in the interim this season and was retained as an assistant to new hire Steve Nash.
Other assistants the Pacers are considering include San Antonio’s Will Hardy, Dan Craig and Chris Quinn of the Miami Heat, Jamahl Mosley and Stephen Silas of the Dallas Mavericks, Darvin Ham and Charles Lee of the Milwaukee Bucks, Pat Delany of the Orlando Magic, David Vanterpool of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Ime Udoka of the Philadelphia 76ers, and Nate Tibbetts of the Portland Trail Blazers, per the report.
