Apr. 16—Kira Navárez is a scientist going from planet to planet to determine the viability of the rocks for humans and prepare them for settlement. While on her last mission, before settling down with her new fiancé, Alan, her life is upended in a matter of days when she finds an alien relic.

Finding this relic sets off a war between species and puts Kira on a journey where she may just be the last hope for humanity.

Over the course of the story, Kira learns just how brave and strong she really is. Christopher Paolini, best known for his "Eragon" series, about a boy who hatches a dragon egg, created a female character that any woman would aspire to be. Kira's all-around strength carries her to the far reaches of the galaxy as she embarks on a fight for humanity with her new family, the crew of the Wallfish.

This book is a long read with 880 pages of story, but there is no lull, and it will keep you reading late into the night to find out what happens next.
