The Columbus Blue Jackets made a move once the free-agent signing period got underway Wednesday afternoon by signing former Calgary Flames defenseman Erik Gudbranson to a four-year, $16 million deal.
Last season, Gudbranson put up career-highs with six goals, 11 assists in 78 games on a one-year, $1.95 million contract with the Flames.
In 11 seasons split between the Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, Ottawa Senators, Nashville Predators and the Flames, the 30-year-old defenseman has accumulated 27 goals and 67 assists with a career plus/minus of -87 and 708 career penalty minutes.
And as soon as the deal was made official, Blue Jackets and hockey fans took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the team's latest move.

I do not feel *that* bad for them because they're all Ohio State fans, every single one of them, but Columbus Blue Jacket fandom is an underrated contender for most brutal fandom in the major U.S. sports

The Columbus Blue Jackets "dipped their toe" in #NHLFreeAgency with the signing of D Erik Gudbranson to a $16M/4-year contract.
I'm a massive fan of Jarmo Kekalainen, but man, oh man, did he ever overpay on this deal with both term and AAV.

I don't understand how the Blue jackets are so good at drafting and so bad at everything else https://t.co/xzYoIqC1bb

Wow! Another awful contract today! The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed Erik Gudbranson to 4-year deal with $4M per year. Yeah, Gudbranson had his best career season this last season, but we doubt he'll play like this in Columbus as well. pic.twitter.com/NKolRJeP5Z

Malkin, 4 years, $6.1 mil per year. Gudbranson, 4 years, $4 mil per year...It's safe to question if the Blue Jackets have any clue what they're doing, and I say this as someone who loves Gudbranson on a personal level and who thinks he's a little better than he gets credit for.

My poor Blue Jackets. Least playoff series wins of any team in hockey and now a move like this. Poverty franchise.

The only person this should sit well with is Erik Gudbranson

Billy, this is Erik Gudbranson. He’s one of the slowest players in the league, and can barely play defence. His only perk is that he’s handsome.
He should cost 1m. We can pay him 4m. pic.twitter.com/h4l94xt1Kk— alasdair™️ (@ae_allchin) July 13, 2022
