RCl inmate, flown out following fight with five inmates, released from shock trauma
An inmate injured during a fight Wednesday night at Roxbury Correctional Institution south of Hagerstown was flown to a Baltimore hospital for treatment, authorities said.
The inmate apparently was stabbed and struck with an object, so he was flown to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma center as a precaution due to the possibility of internal injuries, authorities said.
He was later released from the hospital and "returned to DOC medical care," the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services said in an emailed statement Thursday afternoon.
The statement said the investigation was still in its early stages and the object he was struck with had not be recovered, but a number of potential suspects had been identified.
The inmate was assaulted by other inmates around 9:15 p.m. in a housing unit at the medium-security facility. Investigators believe that about five inmates were involved in the fight, the DPSCS said in a statement Thursday morning.
"Correctional officers controlled the situation quickly and no staff were injured," the earlier statement said.
