Rainy, windy weekend on tap for Volusia and Flagler counties

A low-pressure area developing off the coast of northeast Florida will push thunderstorms, winds, and minor coastal flooding to Volusia and Flagler counties this weekend, forecasters with the National Weather Service in Melbourne said.

That means that on Friday and Saturday, keep an umbrella or a raincoat handy, NWS meteorologists added.

A 90% chance of rain is expected Friday and Volusia and Flagler counties can expect two to four inches of rain but some areas with constant heavy rain may get up to six inches of rainfall, said Cassie Leahy, meteorologist with NWS Melbourne.

"It's not very often that we have high chances of rain like this. It's pretty high," Leahy said.

Temperatures on Friday will reach a high near 73 and wind gusts of up to 25 mph are expected, the NWS said.

'King tides' may be seen further on shore

The increased winds will push already high "king tides" farther onshore, Leahy said.

King tides are higher-than-usual tides that typically occur in Florida in the fall.

Weather conditions will also likely create hazardous boating conditions for small crafts, Leahy said.

On Saturday, rain chances will decrease to 60% but it will still be windy as the low pressure system pushes through the area, Leahy said.

A high for Saturday is also expected to be near 73. Wind gusts are expected to reach 30 mph.

Rough surf and a moderate high risk of rip currents will also be experienced over the weekend, Leahy said.
