RailRiders rained out in Trenton; Zehner released
Jun. 10—The forecast for the night looked fair enough. Some isolated thunderstorms around the area, a window and then more showers coming through later.
A soaking storm before the game, however, left the field at Trenton Thunder Ballpark too wet for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders to play the host Buffalo Bisons on Wednesday night in Trenton, New Jersey.
The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader tonight starting at 5 Righty Brian Keller was supposed to start Wednesday's game for the RailRiders (20-9), while Jacob Waguespack was ready to take the ball for Buffalo (15-14).
Today's originally scheduled game was set to be a matchup of top pitching prospects, with Deivi García starting for SWB and the hard-throwing Nate Pearson going for Buffalo. Pearson took a loss in relief against the RailRiders on May 26, giving up four runs in three innings, including a loud homer by Hoy Park.
Zehner released
The New York Yankees released outfielder Zack Zehner on Wednesday, parting ways with 2015 18th-round pick who played portions of the last three seasons with the RailRiders.
Of the 28-year-old's 543 career games, 154 came with SWB, where he was a .255 hitter with a .764 OPS. Zehner batted .143 (5 for 35) with 10 walks in 12 games this season with the RailRiders. With the Triple-A outfield getting healthier, he was sent back to Double-A Somerset on Saturday.
"He just wanted to make sure he was playing this year, because this coming back off last year where they, you know, last year where they didn't play, he wanted to make sure he played this year," RailRiders manager Doug Davis said. "So, I'm hoping he has another opportunity somewhere else, that'll allow him to play somewhere."
LaMarre rehabbing
Ryan LaMarre was set to play the first game his rehab assignment Wednesday, however with the wet grounds, Davis said he would've waited another day to put the outfielder in the lineup had the game been played as scheduled.
LaMarre hasn't played since May 20 when he strained his hamstring playing against the Texas Rangers.
"He had a really good workout (Wednesday), I mean, even though we didn't hit on — we couldn't get on the field with the tarp on," Davis said.
"Hopefully (today) when we come here he says 'I'm good to go.' And we'll plug him in there and let him play. They sent a kind of an itinerary over the next week for him, and it's a couple days in a row he won't play a full game until, I think, the third or fourth game that he plays."
