Queer-Inclusive '1899' Canceled By Netflix After Just One Season

Netflix has not renewed 1899 for a second season.

Featuring a steamy romance between Élite hunk Miguel Bernardeau (playing Ángel) and actor José Pimentão (playing Ramiro), 1899 wasn’t picked up for a second season by Netflix. The series focused on a group of international migrants traveling on a steamship in the hopes of starting a new life in New York City.

The cancelation of 1899 was confirmed by show co-creator Baran bo Odar, who shared the following statement on Instagram:

“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”

As referenced in the post, Odar and writing partner Jantje Friese previously worked together on Netflix’s Dark, which ran for three seasons. However, 1899 hasn’t received the same treatment from the streaming service.

Regarding the diversity of its actors and characters, 1899 was a multilingual show that featured people from many different parts of the world. It also included an exciting romance between Ángel and Ramiro that LGBTQ+ fans certainly wanted to keep following.

Alas, the series has now been canceled, and fans are mourning the loss of these fascinating new characters they had just gotten to know.
