The coin, unveiled on Wednesday, is similar to thee existing coins, except it features an image of the Queen on one side with a black nickel exterior.
"Like a mourning band, the black outer ring surrounds the polar bear design at the centre of the coin's reverse," the Mint said.
"Queen Elizabeth II served as Canada's head of state for seven decades and for millions of Canadians, she was the only monarch they had ever known," said Marie Lemay, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "Our special $2 circulation coin offers Canadians a way to remember her."
Today marks the three-month anniversary of the Queen's death.

The 2022 “toonie” is gold & black to echo the loss felt by millions of Canadians upon The Queen’s death. The coin honours the late Queen of Canada & her historic 70-years of service. #cdnpoli pic.twitter.com/6W4PFcwTr6— Canadian Crown 🇨🇦 (@Canadian_Crown) December 8, 2022

Can we focus on commemorating prominent Canadians that actually lived in our country and truly helped advance our society?

Ahh wonderful just another expenditure to an institution that holds zero benefit to us, let’s waste more money as a recession looms. Sounds pretty on brand for a monarchy

I’m glad to see that we are honouring our heritage with such a symbolic coin. Too many are dismissing the royal family and England in general, but we wouldn’t be who we are as a great nation without them.

Personally, I feel like there are a lot of Canadian women that should be celebrated on our currency instead of Queen Elizabeth. I am aware that I am biased because my family is from a country that was colonized by England. Just sharing my opinion but am open to all trolls. pic.twitter.com/1L6e15S9cq

A couple of things:
1) I love this
2) the Canadian Mint makes coins for countries all over the world, it’s something to be proud of
3) visit the Mint in Ottawa if you can—but you have to sign up for a tour so plan ahead—I learned so much when I went (and saw lots of gold) https://t.co/bYPqHVHr8H— jump aside (@JodiesJumpsuit) December 7, 2022
Hate that it's being used to honor the queen, but I have to admit, the black ring does look pretty cool. https://t.co/kYW7k9jIMo
