It was more than 20 years ago that Prince William first attended St Andrews University where he met fellow student Kate Middleton. And now another member of the royal family will follow in the famous couple’s footsteps, as it was today announced that William’s cousin Lady Louise will become a student at the Scottish university in the fall.

“Having received her A Level results today, Lady Louise will start at St Andrews University in September to study English,” a Buckingham Place spokesperson said today. The 18-year-old, who is the daughter of the Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, was previously a pupil at St Mary’s School in Ascot, Berkshire near to the family’s residence, Bagshot Park. It has been widely reported that Louise studied English, History, Drama, and Politics but the Palace has never officially announced her chosen subjects or grades.

In June 2020, Louise’s mother, the Countess of Wessex gave an interview to the Sunday Times where she spoke about her daughter’s education and her hopes for her children’s future. “She’s working hard and will do A-levels,” Sophie said. “I hope she goes to university. I wouldn’t force her, but if she wants to. She’s quite clever.” Sophie also emphasized that Louise and her brother James, who do not use HRH titles despite being entitled to them as grandchildren of the sovereign down the male line, are not expected to carry out royal duties when they are older. “We try to bring them up with the understanding that they are very likely to have to work for a living.” Sophie told the Sunday Times. “Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles.”

Despite not being in line to be a working royal, Louise still makes public appearances alongside the royal family from time to time at family events. During the Platinum Jubilee celebrations she attended major events including Trooping the Colour and the Service of Thanksgiving. Just like the Queen, she is a keen horse rider. In May, Louise took part in a Platinum Jubilee event at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, riding the late Prince Philip’s carriage.

Prince William and Kate met at St Andrews when they both started studying there in 2001. They subsequently lived together alongside friends and by the time they graduated in 2005 were in a serious relationship. It was not until six years later, however, in 2011, that they tied the knot and began their life together on the world stage.
