KATIE MATHER: When it comes to certain foods, expensive doesn't always correlate to being better. So I thought it would be interesting to get some edible 24 karat gold myself, which you can get on Amazon very easily, and add it to everyday regular foods to see if it really does elevate the experience, if I feel fancier while I'm eating it. Is edible gold worth its weight in gold.

OK, so our food line up here is three items that I think are pretty reasonably priced as is, for what they are, if not cheap. And we're going to be adding edible gold to them. One popular gold-infused food item that's out in the world is this $18 coffee that has gold flakes in it. So I bought a bodega coffee that is less than $2, and I'm just going to add gold flakes to it and see how I feel about that.

The second one is comparing the aforementioned $66 cheeseburger. We're going to add a sheet of gold leaf to the buns of a McDonald's Quarter Pounder, which is around $5. And then finally, we're going to look at takeout sushi, which was around $8, and see if that compares to the $100 gold leaf sushi that's sold in places like Japan.

Already, this doesn't make me feel fancier, because no one can tell that I'm drinking gold coffee.

The gold adds absolutely no taste, you can feel a solid with your coffee that you know is not coffee. I would like to drink my regular coffee in peace without the threat of these little leafs going into my mouth. OK so coffee kind of a bust, not worth it.

Next, we're going to have a golden cheeseburger.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

You know, this just tastes like a cheeseburger to me. And the gold leaf doesn't add anything, but I do like the flashiness. This would be a good Instagram opportunity. All right, so the burger slightly better than the coffee, but still I'm not that impressed with the gold leaf.

Let's see if this is really worth it.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

You cannot taste anything, there is no difference. I will give the sushi points for is one, I feel very fancy eating this, so the gold does make a huge difference. And what I also like about it is, unlike the coffee, because there's already seaweed here, there is no texture difference at all. So gold sushi is pretty cool, but it's definitely not worth however hundreds of dollars people are paying for.

So, all in all, if you want to add a little bit of fanciness into your everyday life, into your fast food choices, go ahead and get some gold leaf paper off of Amazon. There's just no need to go to these restaurants and pay for it. You can do it yourself. and it's really not that fancy. Honestly, I'm not that impressed.
