PSC offers information session to help older students, GED students forge bright future

So many people are leaving jobs during these uncertain times, leaving a wide-open job market for any ambitious person seeking a new career.

A staggering 4.5 million Americans quit their jobs in November 2021, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which also reports that there are 10.6 million job openings in the country.

That's why Pensacola State College is holding an Adult Student Information Session at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18. The session will help returning adult students who either want to earn a degree/certificate and start a new career or who previously attended a college or university and never finished.

The event will take place in Room 509 of the G. Thomas Delaino Student Center on the Pensacola campus.

"The idea is to get these adult learners more information and show them a pathway from our Adult Education program to the College," said Debby Meyer, PSC Director of Adult Education. "Some are looking for a GED and that immediate help, but we want them to know that they can go to college and that we can prepare them."

Nearly 20% of all PSC students are 35 years of age and older.

The PSC Adult Education Program has three facets:

  • Adult Basic Education: These classes are for adults whose academic skills are below a ninth-grade level. The classes cover basic reading, math and language skills and help students prepare to move to GED classes.

  • General Education Development: These classes are for students who do not have a high school diploma and whose academic skills are at or above a ninth-grade level. The classes prepare students for all areas of the GED examinations, which include math, science, social studies and reading/language arts.

  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL): These classes are for people who don’t use English as their primary language.

PSC Associate Dean of Enrollment Management Amanda Turner said many people are looking for something different in their lives.

"You see it in the news — a lot of people are changing careers," she said. "We have programs that can help them. This event is to help guide them and give them all the information they need to move forward."

PSC Admissions, TRIO Educational Opportunity Center, Financial Aid (FAFSA) and Adult Basic Education representatives will be on hand.
