Progress staff wins awards in photography, sports coverage

Jun. 15—New award hardware will be on the wall at the Claremore Daily Progress.

The Oklahoma Press Association presented its Better Newspaper Contest Awards during the OPA Annual Convention over this past weekend.

The Progress took first place in the Division II Photography category and third place in the Sports Coverage category.

Sports Editor Kevin Green won first place in Sports Story with "Edwards finds calling in sitting volleyball." Green wrote about Claremore-born athlete Tia Edwards who found her calling competing for the Team USA sitting volleyball. She has competed at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 2016 World ParaVolley Intercontinental Cup championship and the 2021 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Correspondent Jay Lederman won first place in Sports Photograph with a photo he took of Sequoyah freshman receiver Dylan Burks diving into the end zone for a 27-yard touchdown against Salina.

News Editor Chelsea Weeks won third place in Business Story with "Morton's open New Perspective: Shop focused on providing zero waste products, sustainability." The story focuses on Claremore residents Tonya and John Morton who opened their low-waste shop, New Perspective.
