During an attempted traffic stop, a 40-year-old suspect on probation fled from deputies and later crashed his vehicle into a tree in Victorville.

The Victorville Sheriff’s Station reported that at around 8:17 p.m. on Friday, Deputy Greterman was on proactive patrol when he observed a black Toyota Camry committing several traffic violations.

The deputy attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle near Amargosa and Dos Palmas roads. However, the driver failed to yield.

The driver, later identified as John Howard Wilkerson of Apple Valley, led deputies on a pursuit that endangered others on the road and lasted just over three miles through residential neighborhoods, sheriff's officials said.

The pursuit ended when Wilkerson’s vehicle collided with a tree. Deputies detained the suspect, who was found to be on post-release community supervision out of Riverside County for felony evading.

Emergency medical personnel responded and treated Wilkerson at the scene for traffic-related injuries.

He was later transported to the hospital for medical clearance before being booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

He was booked for a suspected felony, evading a peace officer with a disregard for safety and having an outstanding probation warrant.
