Prince Harry's uncle shares moving message of support about miscarriage

Prince Harry's uncle, Princess Diana's brother Charles Spencer, has shared a loving message of support for Harry and Meghan Markle, after it was revealed this week that the couple had suffered a miscarriage. Writing in an essay titled 'The Losses We Share' for the New York Times, the Duchess of Sussex described in painful detail the moment she realised she was losing the couple's unborn second child in July this year.
"I felt a sharp cramp. I dropped to the floor with [Archie] in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right. I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second," Meghan poignantly wrote.
Charles Spencer - who is formally known as Earl Spencer after inheriting the title from his father following his death in 1992 - appeared on ITV's Lorraine this week. On the show, he was asked about Harry and Meghan's sad news. "I can't imagine the agony for any couple of losing a child in this way. It's so very, very sad," Charles told Lorraine Kelly, adding: "All thoughts with them today."
While there have, of course, been some mixed reactions to Meghan Markle sharing such personal heartache, the response has largely been positive. Baby loss awareness charity, Tommy's, has praised the Duchess for using her public platform to speak so candidly about having a miscarriage, which somehow remains a taboo. Speaking to Cosmopolitan UK, a spokesperson for the charity said: "Mothers like Meghan sharing their stories is a vital step in breaking down [the] stigma and shame [surrounding baby loss].
"Meghan's honesty and openness sends a powerful message to anyone who loses a baby: this may feel incredibly lonely, but you are not alone. Friends and family, doctors and midwives, all of us at support organisations like Tommy’s – we’re here."
Meghan and Harry's bravery in opening up about something so intimately painful sets the tone for how they intend to move forward in their non-working royal roles; with honesty and humanity, just as Princess Diana did.
