Prince Harry has revealed that he felt the presence of his late mother Princess Diana while he and his wife Meghan Markle were rebuilding their lives after stepping back from the royal family.

The Duke of Sussex shared the sentimental revelation during his and Meghan’s two-hour interview with Oprah Winfrey, after telling Winfrey that he believes his mother would only ever want their happiness, and that the couple was only able to move to California because of his inheritance.

“I brought what my mom left me,” he said. “And without that, we would not have been able to do this, so touching back on what my mother would think of this, I think she saw it coming. I certainly felt her presence throughout this whole process.”

As for how the late Princess of Wales would feel about his and Meghan’s treatment during their time as working royals, and their decision to relocate to the US, Prince Harry said that his mother would have been “very angry and very sad” with how it panned out.

“I think she would feel very angry with how this has panned out and very sad, but ultimately, all she’d ever want is for us to be happy,” he told Winfrey.

During the interview, Prince Harry also touched on his fear that “history would repeat itself,” and his relief that he and Meghan were able to safely and successfully remove themselves from a similar situation to that of the one experienced by Princess Diana before her untimely death at the age of 36.

“For me, I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago. It has been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we have each other,” Prince Harry said of his and Meghan’s experience in comparison to his mother’s.

For the interview, Meghan also opted to wear Princess Diana’s diamond bracelet so it would feel as if she were there.

In addition to its significance as a family relic, the bracelet is also precious as it was used to create Meghan’s engagement ring, according to People, which notes that Prince Harry took two stones from the piece to create his wife’s three-stone ring.
