Primary Election Results for Amarillo and notable statewide races

Local primary runoffs in Potter and Randall county for three commissioner seats and a justice of the peace were decided Tuesday, with all voting centers reporting.

Most statewide races had at least 80 percent of precincts reporting by late Tuesday evening.

In local races

In the Republican primary runoff for Judge of the 47th District, Dee Johnson captured 56% of the vote over her opponent Jo Mar Wilson, who captured 44% of the vote out of 12,859 ballots cast. Johnson got 7,154 votes to Wilson’s 5,705 votes.

In the one local Democratic primary runoff for Potter County Commissioner Precinct 4, Warren Coble Sr. won 59% of the vote in a low turnout election over Melodie Graves, who ended the night with 41% of the vote. Overall, Coble collected 138 votes to his opponent’s 95 votes.

Randall County had two county commissioner seats up for grabs, both resulting in lopsided victories in the Republican party primary runoff.

For the Precinct 2 seat, Eric Barry won 57% of the vote with 1,876 votes compared to Terry Wright’s 43% with 1,405 votes. In Precinct 4, retired Amarillo police officer Tam Boatler got 1,528 votes to win 67% of the vote compared to Melissa Kalka’s 747 votes which gave her 33% of the vote.

Also in Randall County, the Justice of the Peace for Precinct 4, Joanna Garcia Flores pulled a mild upset in a close race over Kyle Balke, who had the most votes in the March primary for the position. Flores got 3,721 votes for 52% of the vote to Balke’s 3,492 votes and 48% of the vote. With over 4,000 fewer votes than in the March primary, Flores only got 58 fewer votes than she received in that election but Balke received 1,510 fewer votes in the run-off than he received in March.

Notable statewide races

In a race not yet called for the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor - with 82% of votes counted Mike Collier leads with 203,472 votes and 55% of the vote to Michelle Beckley’s 169,105 votes for 45% of the vote

With 80% of the vote counted statewide incumbent Attorney General Ken Paxton won in a landslide over George P. Bush with 68% of the vote compared to his opponent's 32% in the Republican primary runoff. Paxton garnered 510,643 votes to Bush’s 32.5 votes. Paxton is seeking his third term.

The Democratic primary runoff also resulted in a projected lopsided win with Rochelle Garza getting 219,567 votes for 61% of the vote to her opponent Joe Jaworski’s 139,632 votes for 39% of the vote. Currently, 82% of the vote has been counted in this race.

For Texas Land Commissioner for the Republican nomination Dawn Buckingham with 83% of the vote in received 480,515 votes for 68.9% of the vote to Tim Westey’s 216,465 votes which was 31% of the vote with 83% of the votes in.

In a closely contested race in the Democratic primary with 81% of the votes counted Jay Kleberg leads with 185,462 votes for 53% of the vote to Sandragrace Martinez’s 164,681 votes for 47% of the vote.

For Comptroller with 82% of votes counted Janet T. Dudding won the Democratic nomination for State Comptroller with 218,164 votes to Angel Luis Vegas’s 140,449 votes. Budding received 61% of the vote to Vega’s 39% of the vote.

Republican incumbent Railroad Commissioner Wayne Christian won easily over his opponent Sarah Stogner in their primary runoff with 47,356 votes compared to Stogner’s votes. Christian received 66% of the vote and Stogner received 34% of the vote with 84% of the votes counted.
