BOYS BASKETBALL

Smithville 59, Chippewa 41

With a win and a Dalton loss Friday, Smithville moved into a tie for first place in the Wayne County Athletic League.

"It's nice, but it's not our ultimate goal," said Smithies coach Corey Kaufman. "We're always trying to get better for the tournament and that's really what we're focused on."

Using a balanced attack, the Smithies handled the Chipps behind Carter Piatt, Carter Fath and Mac Butzer. Piatt scored a team-high 13, Fath had 12 and Butzer also scored 12. Reece Riggenbach continued his strong play with seven and Cole Maibach finished with six.

"I thought we played good team offense and defense," said Kaufman. "We're playing eight right now and our guys have a lot of confidence in each other."

The Chipps were led by Garrett Hillyer with nine points while Brendan Donnelly had eight and Logan Toler finished with seven. For the second time this year, the Smithies limited high-scoring Caleb Gasser, holding him to just five points.

Northwestern 94, Rittman 86 (2OT)

Brett Alberts and Alex Ciolek were clutch when it mattered the most and that's just what Northwestern needed.

The pair combined for 17 points in the two overtimes to lead the Huskies as Alberts capped a 34-point outburst with eight in the second OT. Alberts also finished with a triple-double, dishing 10 assists and grabbing 10 rebounds. Ciolek drained four free throws and knocked down a bucket to close out a 21-point effort.
