CENTRAL LAKE – Fueled by solid pitching and just enough hitting, the Onaway baseball team captured a Ski Valley doubleheader sweep at Central Lake on Monday.

In a 3-1 victory in the opener, Bridger Peel delivered a gem on the mound for the Cardinals, striking out 13, allowing just two hits and walking one in a six-inning complete game.

Offensively, Cole Selke led the Cardinals with two hits and a run scored, while Cody Ruppert had a hit and scored a run. Justin Kramer and Tucker Price each recorded a hit, Jack Morgan knocked in a run, and Lucas Lovelace scored a run.

Lovelace’s two hits and two runs scored sparked the Cardinals in a 5-3 victory in the nightcap. Kramer had a hit and scored a run, Veal tallied a hit and a run scored, and Anthony Santiago and Price each chipped in with a hit.

Selke was Onaway’s winning pitcher, striking out nine, allowing five hits and walking two in 4 2/3 innings thrown. Veal, who tossed 1 1/3 innings, struck out three, walked three and allowed no hits.

"Bridger Peel pitched an awesome game," said Onaway coach Rick Price. "We didn't hit very well but made some great plays in both games. Justin Kramer stole home, so that was cool to see. Nice to see a young team starting to play some good defense. We just need to get better at the plate."

Onaway (9-7, 7-3 Ski Valley) hosts Johannesburg-Lewiston in a conference doubleheader on Thursday.

Chiefs golf plays third meet in four days

TRAVERSE CITY – It’s been a heck of a grind for the Cheboygan boys golf team as of late.

On Monday, the Chiefs, who competed in their third meet in four days, played in the Traverse City Central Invitational.

Blaine Baldwin’s 90 led the Chiefs, who finished 10th with a 380 score. Other Cheboygan players posting scores included Zach VanFleet (92), Max Hart (97), Luke Karsten (101) and Carson Lavender (113).

Traverse City Central took first in the meet with a 305 score.

Competing at the Johannesburg-Lewiston Invitational at Treetops (Tradition) in Gaylord on Sunday, the Chiefs (354) finished fourth out of eight teams.

Hart led the way for the Chiefs with an 85, VanFleet fired an 87, Lavender posted a 90, Baldwin tallied a 92, and Karsten shot a 99.

Houghton Lake’s 319 was good enough for first place.

At the Alpena Invitational on Friday, May 13, Cheboygan finished eighth with a 365.

Scott Pavwoski and VanFleet both shot 89’s for the Chiefs, who also received scores from Hart (90), Baldwin (97), Karsten (99) and Lavender (107).

TC Central took first at the meet, posting a 307.

“It’s been a grind,” said Cheboygan coach Tim Reed, discussing his team’s most recent stretch. "It’s this 30-day golf season we have where by the time we get out and play, the tournaments are all jam packed together.

“It’s been a lot of golf in a short period of time, but the kids have been game for it. They’re excited to play, but it’ll be nice to have some time off. It’ll give us a chance to get back to practice and work on some things we need to work on. It’ll do us good.”

Cheboygan will host an home invitational on Monday, May 23.
