ENGLEWOOD — The logo on the singlet may have changed, but Madison Atwood is still hoisting an incredible amount of plates.

The defending Class 3A state champion at North Port, Atwood moved down the road to the Imagine School at North Port and still is collecting medals.

Atwood won the snatch with a meet-best 180 pounds and also took the traditional bench and clean and jerk with a combined 430, also the best among competitors as the Class 1A-Region 4 meet Saturday afternoon at Lemon Bay High.

The only difference, Atwood said, was the closeness of the Sharks team. Otherwise, weights are weights and she still remains among the state’s best.

Last year in the 169-pound weight class, Atwood benched 185 pounds and lifted 220 in the clean and jerk for a 405 total.

Moving up to the 183-pound weight class this year, she benched 200 and lifted 230 in the clean and jerk.

Her aim this year is a state record.

In 183, the clean and jerk mark is 230 set by Kjayla Martin of Orlando Timber Creek in 2013.

Atwood’s goal is 255 in the clean and jerk, a figure she has yet to reach.

In the first year of the snatch, Atwood hopes to add 10 pounds to her current figure and reach 190.

“It’s something I’ve done,” the junior said, adding she has done it in the past and it comes naturally.

The only difference at Imagine School is that Madison is not lifting with her twin sister, Tristain, who is injured. Tristan was second in the state at the 154-pound weight class last year for North Port High.

The Sharks, made up of only three girls who have lifted in the past, are making strides as a team, also.

They finished second in both the snatch competition and the traditional meet to traditional power Lemon Bay High.

The Manta Rays won the snatch with 48 points to 38 for Imagine School at North Port. In the regular meet, the Manta Rays prevailed 60-25.

“They brought it and more,” Lemon Bay coach Dawn Hall said. “They really, really stepped up. They did a great job today.”

The Manta Rays crowned five champions in the traditional meet with the top finishers in the 10 weight classes automatically gaining a berth at the Class 1A State Meet on Feb. 12 at Port St. Joe High School. A number of at-large bids will be awarded by the FHSAA.

Prevailing for Lemon Bay were 110-pounder junior Addison Adcock (105 bench, 110 clean and jerk, 215 total), sophomore 119-pounder Quincey Dunlap (120-120-240), junior 129-pounder Bryn Atherholt (125-135-260), junior 139-pounder Natalee Brown (155-160-315) and freshman 199-pounder Kaci James (135-165-300)

Dunlap finished in a tie for first and won by less body weight.

Natalee Brown of Lemon Bay High competes in the bench press at the Class 1A-Region 4 meet Saturday afternoon at Lemon Bay High. Brown won the 139-pound division in both the traditional and the snatch events.

“We’re hoping for more,” Hall said. “We had 14 girls medal. They did a great job.”

Adcock (90 pounds), Brown (115), James (120) and Presley Engelauf, who finished second in the traditional, finished first in the snatch competition. Engelauf had a 110.

“We had never done it,” Hall said. “We started training with it. They picked it up really well. They wanted to do it. They were excited about it. Expectations were met and exceeded. It’s a hard region. We were happy.”

Last year, Lemon Bay had five lifters medal at the state meet.

“That would be nice to repeat, if not more,” Hall said. “We’re just happy, young and ready to go.”

Imagine School seventh-grader Makayla Waterhouse also pulled off double gold with a 110 in the snatch and a 140-150-290 at the 169-pound weight class.
