PREP ROUNDUP: Lady Panthers run past Berries into final
Dec. 1—Logansport was able to hang with Pioneer for one quarter during Tuesday's Logansport Savings Bank Invitational girls basketball game in Royal Center.
But the three-time defending champion Panthers had too much firepower and eventually pulled away for a 65-34 win to advance to Saturday's championship game.
Ashlynn Brooke had 19 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and five steals, and Hailey Cripe had 15 points and 12 boards to lead the Panthers (5-1).
Macee Baker added eight points, Kylie Attinger and Gracie Hopper had six apiece, Makenna Strycker added five and Brooklyn Borges added four points and eight boards.
"It's always good to beat Logansport. Our county schools always look forward to those games and I know Logansport does as well," Pioneer coach Jeff Brooke said. "I thought Coach did a nice job. He came out in that first quarter and had that triangle-and-two. I told the girls that's not the first time you're probably going to see that this year. But Baker did a nice job, hit those two 3s in the first quarter. I thought Attinger did a really nice job coming in. She only scored a bucket but got some good looks in there. In that second quarter we opened it up when they got out of that triangle-and-two. We were able to get some inside-outside game. Give Logansport credit, they did a nice job, had a nice game plan. I think our defense just kind of outlasted them. We were playing that man-to-man, kind of that sagging defense."
Logan was within 15-10 after one quarter of play before Pioneer extended the lead to 36-15 at halftime and 52-21 after three.
"Hat's off to Pioneer. They've got a nice, talented group," Logan coach Chris Keisling said. "Of course Ashlynn Brooke is a real talent as well as Hailey Cripe. That dynamic duo really creates some issues that you've got to deal with. As a coach sometimes you may overthink things, and I may have overthought it tonight in terms of defense in terms of how to play that. But we played pretty solid the early part of the game as we went triangle-and-two. But the thing is on the triangle-and-two I needed to use my primary ball-handlers and offensive players to play a lot of defense too. That can cause some issues when you're trying to stay in a game like that."
Kendra Sutton had 10 points and five boards for the Berries (0-7). Gabby Richie had nine points, five boards and three steals. Lydia Goad had nine points on three 3-pointers.
Caston hosts Lewis Cass tonight. The consolation and final will be held on Saturday at the Berry Bowl. Logan plays in the 11:30 a.m. consolation while Pioneer plays in the 1 p.m. championship game.
WINAMAC 57, WEST CENTRAL 29
Kingsley Kroft set a school record for 3-pointers in a game with seven as she scored 21 points in a win over visiting West Central.
Kaya Campbell added nine points and Brooke-Lynne Ulerick had eight for the Warriors (4-5).
GIRLS SWIMMING
CASS 109, ROCHESTER 65
Cass' Erika Baber set two school records during winning swims in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle at Rochester. She also was part of the winning 200 medley relay and 200 sprint relay.
Maryn Zeck won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and was a part of the winning relay teams. Trinity Hagen swept wins in the 100 and 200 free and Haley Miller was second in both.
The Queenfish also had outstanding swims with time drops from Hannah Plauschin, Nevaeh Gordon and Sydney Holmquist.
Cass hosts Clinton Central on Thursday.
WRESTLING
CASS 45, NORTHFIELD 34
Cass opened the season with a win over Northfield in Walton.
Winners for the Kings included Jack Miller (106), Max Grist (113), Kaine Fowler (120), Lucas Grist (126), Jensen Burrous (138), Javonie Cervantes (145), Rowdy Frey (152) and Adam Bandelier (170).
"The kids wrestled hard and it's great to start the season with a win," Cass coach Nate Burrous said. "Tonight was a good gauge of where we are and was helpful in identifying things we need to work on before Saturday."
The Kings compete at the Maconaquah Super Duals on Saturday.
