Prep report: Late goal seals Hermantown win over Proctor

Oct. 4—HERMANTOWN — Hermantown junior Nataleh Rapp got free in front of the goal late in the second half and put a shot into the net to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead and eventual win over Proctor Monday at Corey Veech Field and Centricity Stadium.

Rapp's goal was well-timed. About 6 minutes earlier, Proctor had cut the Hawk lead in half when Rails junior Kelsey Tangen booted a long shot over the head of goalie Cambriia Thomas.

Hermantown coach Nathan Hanson was proud of the way the girls responded to the Proctor goal and said it's something they've worked on throughout the season.

"We can't let that change the momentum of the game in a negative way," Hanson said. "It has to change it in a positive way and the girls have been responding well. Nobody gets down on each other — they're building each other back up and we've started responding that way. It's been a huge improvement for the girls as we've gotten to the latter part of the season."

The Hermantown defense was sharp throughout the day, preventing Tangen and the Rails from taking point-blank shots in front of the goal.

"Our back line did a nice job of staying compact when they were getting their changes," Hanson said. "When they sent the ball forward, we had our center backs compression them when we needed them to try and limit those chances. The biggest thing I talked with our defensive mids about at halftime was tracking back and helping defensively to take away that space in the middle in front of our back line, and I think we did a nice job of that."

In addition to Rapp's goal, Emma Herstad scored in the sixth minute and Natalya Hooey scored in the 41st minute for Hermantown.

Camden Rask made five saves for his fifth solo shutout of the season, and the Hunters' seventh.

Parker Chastey scored in the early going at Public Schools Stadium, and then assisted on a second-half goal from Matt Eklund.

Elijah Aultman assisted Jordan Aultman's first-minute goal, then scored three of his own as the Lumberjacks rolled to a Section 7 victory on the road.

Walker Marquardt stopped two shots for C-E-C (12-2), which has won 11 consecutive games.

Julien Fisher had a brace in this Iron Range derby at Vic Power Field. Drew Forer made nine saves for the Bluejackets, who have won three in a row, their longest streak of the season.

Bailey Monson had a big night on both offense and defense for the Eagles, recording 13 kills and 20 digs to lead her team in both categories in a 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 26-24 win.

Izzy Molina posted eight kills and four blocks and Audrey Swanson had nine kills and 18 digs. Kyra Latvala ran the offense, accumulating 26 assists.

Morgan Wigg and Alexis Hoffmann had seven kills apiece but the Rebels were swept on Monday night at Aitkin.

Jorja Jusczak was the Rebels' dig leader with 21, while India Johnson and Sarah Christy added 12 and 10, apiece.
