Prep girls tennis: Regis falls in team state championship
Oct. 24—Regis girls tennis advanced to the Division 2 team state championship on Saturday morning with a 4-3 victory against Edgewood, but fell 6-1 in the title bout later in the day to top-seeded Catholic Memorial in Madison.
Colleen Callaghan got the Ramblers' victory against Catholic Memorial out of the No. 3 singles position, besting Grace Dorow 6-0, 6-0.
Strong singles play helped Regis advance out of the semifinals, with Sofie Merrick, Callaghan and Ashley Chilson all winning their respective matchups. Merrick defeated Alana Johnson 6-4, 6-1 out of the No. 2 spot, Callaghan bested Lucy Herlitzka 6-1, 6-1 out of No. 3 and Chilson triumphed 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 against Hannah Poehling out of No. 4.
Also winning in the Edgewood matchup were the No. 1 doubles pairing of Evie Shepich and Teigan Petersilka. They took a 6-2, 6-3 contest against Samantha Buchner and Maeve Shanahan.
Regis concludes the season 19-11. Catholic Memorial won both its matches 6-1 Saturday to claim the state title, having defeated Xavier in the semifinals.
The state championship appearance was Regis' second in program history. The Ramblers also took second in 2016, when Edgewood secured the title.
