Prep football roundup: YME falls hard in overtime

Oct. 16—GRANITE FALLS — Yellow Medicine East String played what its coach deemed one of — if not the best — game of the season in a 37-36 overtime loss to Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Friday.

The Sting hoped for a victory for homecoming, but fell short.

"The boys fought like crazy; we're super proud of them," YME coach Dave Schueler said. " It was a hard-fought game and we came out and we were physical."

Despite a slight chill in the 40-degree weather, both teams battled in a highly competitive first half.

The Sting scored on the opening drive with a connection between junior Cody Dahlager and sophomore Andrew Flaten. Following a penalty on RTR on a kick attempt, the Sting successfully completed a two-point conversion with a scramble by Flaten.

The Knights answered on their opening drive with a rushing touchdown by senior running back Darrick Baartman, but failed on the two-point conversion to trail 8-6.

RTR successfully recovered the kick return when a squib attempt bounced off the ground and popped into the air after hitting an YME player and landing into the hands of junior Cody Wichmann.

After pushing the ball near the end zone, Knights' senior quarterback Jonah Christensen attempted a quarterback sneak but eventually bulldozed his way through a pile of Sting defenders and into the end zone. Following a successful two-point conversion with a run by Baartman, the Knights took a 14-8 lead to close out the first quarter.

The Knights recovered the ball again on a fumble by Flaten on the Sting's own 8-yard line.

RTR converted on the short field possession on a scramble by Christianson for a touchdown to give the Knights a 21-8 lead following the kick attempt by Wichmann.

With the Knights seemingly beginning to run away with the victory, YME bounced back on the kick return by taking the ball to the Knights' 33-yard line.

The Sting ended the possession with a touchdown connection between Sting senior receiver Isaac Jimenez and Flaten, narrowing the deficit to six with a successful field-goal attempt.

The Knights' next drive saw the first punt of the night, bringing some energy back to the Sting sideline.

With the first half coming to a close, the Sting tied the game at 21 with a touchdown connection between senior tight end Patrick Hoernemann and Flaten.

YME attempted another two-point conversion after RTR was dealt two penalties on the PAT, but was unsuccessful, leading the score being tied at halftime.

"We were down 21-8 and still battled back before halftime," Schueler said. "It was like everything we have asked from this team all season long they did tonight and we were really proud."

RTR scored a touchdown in the third and YME bounced back in the fourth.

The Sting scored a touchdown in overtime, but RTR scored a touchdown and converted on a two-point conversion to take the win.

Schueler says Friday is a moral victory.

"There are a lot of positives we take from this," he said. "The kids played with pure heart tonight and gave everything they had and that's all we could ask for. We're definitely looking forward to the future and excited to see where this team goes from here."
